The St. Mary’s boys hockey team was in a defensive showdown against Arlington Catholic Wednesday night at Connery Rink and when the smoke cleared, it was the Cougars going home with the 1-0 win.Click here for a photo gallery. The lone goal of the game came with five seconds left in the first period on an Arlington Catholic power play.”This was a really a great high school hockey game tonight. We had our chances to tie this game, but we could not get the puck in the net. The boys have been playing really well and really hard; it’s a shame we haven’t won or tied a few more games,” coach Mark Lee said.Nick Holt had a solid performance in net for the Spartans, who are 4-8-2.Melrose 3, Peabody 2At Flynn Rink in Medford, the Tanners (2-8-2) were in this one all the way, but their offensive woes continue to be a problem. Tyler Gillespie scored the first Peabody goal, unassisted, and Cam Smullen accounted for the second one, which tied the game at two heading into the third period, where Melrose’s Jon Batelho scored his second of the night to win it.Lowell 6, Revere 1At Lowell, the game was tied at the end of the first period, but Lowell scored two goals late in the second period to put the Patriots (0-10-1) in a hole. Cam Whalen scored for Revere with freshman Joe Ristino getting the assist.GIRLS HOCKEYWinthrop/Lynn 2, Cambridge 2At Simoni Rink in Cambridge, the Bulldawgs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Ariana Dembro and Kara Donati, and they outshot Cambridge 41-14, but the Falcons battled back with a goal in the second period and one in the third to salvage the tie.Winthrop/Lynn is 6-3-3 with St. Mary’s on tap for Saturday at Connery Rink.
