The St. Mary’s boys hockey team squared off against powerhouse Hingham. The Spartans hung tough, but fell short 2-1 at Hingham Wednesday night.St. Mary’s coach Mark Lee saluted his team’s effort.”This was a great team effort tonight. We played our best game of the season against one of the top teams in the state. I know we didn’t win, but there are only positives to take out of this game. We have grown so much as a team from the beginning of the season to right now. We are a completely different team and I am excited for the rest of the season,” Lee said.It was scoreless through one period of play. The Spartans broke the scoreless tie midway through the second period, when Cam Grenham scored, assisted by Jackson Allard and Jordan Manthorne. Hingham scored two goals in the final period to pull away late from St. Mary’s. The Spartans are now 5-9-2.St. John’s 4, Catholic Memorial 1At Wilmington, the Eagles took a quick 2-0 lead in the first period with goals by Brian Pinho and Andrew Brandano. Catholic Memorial cut the lead in half (2-1) in the second period, but St. John’s scored two unanswered goals (Paul Crehan and Brandano). St. John’s is now 12-2.Lowell 5, Revere 1At Revere, Revere found itself down 3-0 after the first period, and could never fully recover. The Patriots’ lone goal came in the second period from Shane Cambria. Revere is now 0-12-1.Gloucester 4, Swampscott 2At Rockett Arena, the Big Blue (10-2) led 2-1 in the second period, but the Fishermen turned up the heat to score three straight goals for the win.Gloucester got on the board 14:33 into the first period on Cam DeCoste’s first of three goals. Swampscott’s Nunzio Morretti tied the game midway through the second period and Chris Carmen gave the Big Blue the lead a little over two minutes later. DeCoste scored again late in the period to tie the game and he and Casey Noyes found the net in the third period for the win.”This was a tough one,” Swampscott coach Gino Faia said. “We kind of controlled play. We outshot them and outworked them, but we had a couple of bad breaks and missed plays.”Gloucester goalie Owen Parisi had 35 saves and Swampscott goalie Trent Gallagher, 10 saves.Swampscott is 3-1 in the Northeastern Conference Small.Arlington Catholic 6, Bishop Fenwick 0At Arlington, the Cougars led 3-0 after two periods and then iced the win in the third. Fenwick’s Patrick O’Leary had a solid game in net with 38 saves and captains P.J. Usalis and Drew Thibodeau also played well with several scoring opportunities. Fenwick is 3-11 with Lowell Catholic on tap for Saturday.GIRLS HOCKEYSt. Mary’s 2, Hingham 2At Hingham, it was a stalemate through the first period. Spartan Vanessa VanBurskirk broke the 0-0 stalemate with 1:20 remaining in the second period. The Spartans took a 2-0 lead early in the third period, after Samantha Callahan scored, assisted by Alison Butler. Hingham would score two goals in the final three minutes of the game, with the last goal coming with just 24 seconds remaining on the clock. St. Mary’s had plenty of opportunities, as it had 38 shots on net. Lauren Skinnion had a strong performance in net for the Spartans (21 saves). St. Mary’s has now qualified for the state tournament (10-2-2).Marblehead 6, Shawsheen 2At Lowell, the Magicians scored two goals in each period. Marblehead was tied 2-2 at the end of the first period, but took a 4-2 lead at the end of the second period. Leading the way for Marblehead was Brittany Lydon (2 goals). Rachel McKay also helped out (1 goal, 1 assist). Marblehead is now 8-5-1.
