February 2, 2013 by daily_staff

It was a win-win situation for the Peabody High girls basketball team Friday night.

The Tanners not only defeated a relentless Salem team, 52-42, they raised money to fight breast cancer at “Pink Night” at Peabody High.

Peabody (11-2) opened up a 14-point lead at one point, but Salem turned up the head defensively and made the Tanners work for everything that came their way.

“We needed a game like this,” Peabody coach Jane Heil said. “We were being tested until midway through the fourth quarter.”

Carolyn Scacchi racked up her eighth double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds and she went 7-for-7 from the line. Sophomore Courtney Buo had 13 points and 11 rebounded with Alex Lomasney and Olivia Summit each kicking in with nine.

Brianna Rodriguez had 14 for Salem and Rachel Zipper, 12.

Classical 47, Beverly 37

At Classical, Kristin Lauria and Monta Connolly provided the Rams (10-7) with a big one-two punch. Lauria had 14 points and Connolly, 12. Together they provided 24 of Classical’s 30 points through three quarters. When they cooled down, Bobbie Dee Regan, Franki Galeazzi and Chelsea Rogers stepped up with big fourth-quarter threes to help the Rams pull away. The Rams need one more win to qualify for the state tournament.

Minuteman 52, Tech 46

At Lexington Tech (5-10) couldn’t find a solution to Minuteman’s Morgan White, who torched the Tigers for 37 points.

“She was shooting the lights out,” Tech coach Kevin McDormand said.

Hattie Watkins led the way for Tech with 21 points. Mimi Gonzalez had 11 points and Ryce Colon, nine points.

“I thought we were in control early, but down the stretch we couldn’t make the plays we needed to make,” McDormand said.

Gloucester 71, Saugus 56

At Saugus, Norma Waggett scored 40 points and pulled down 13 rebounds in a losing cause for the Sachems. Gianna Zirpolo chipped with 11 and Gloucester’s Julianna Costanzo had 29 points.

St. Mary’s 58, Arl. Cath. 48

At Arlington Catholic, Jennie Mucchiarone had 18 points, Brianna Rudolph 16 and Sharell Sanders 10 as the Spartans erased an early 9-1 deficit to raise their record to 14-1 (7-1 in the Catholic Central League/Large).

Emily Morris also starred, pulling down 12 rebounds and blocking five shots.

It is the first time the Spartans have swept the season’s series with the Cougars.

Winthrop 39, Swampscott 24

At Swampscott, the Big Blue stayed with a 2-3 zone the whole game, creating havoc for the Vikings (12-3, 7-2), who turned the ball over 20 times.

Theresa Jones led the way for Winthrop with 11 points (also pulling down seven boards) while Kristen Siscamanis had eight.

Alexa Goldman had eight for Swampscott.

Danvers 55, Marblehead 42

At Marblehead, this one was a game right up to the end with Danvers pulling away down the stretch. The Magicians missed a couple of “bunnies” late in the game and had to start fouling, coach Skip Likins said. Danvers responded with 7-for-8 free throw shooting in the fourth quarter.

Mia Bongiorno had 16 points and Emily Freedlan, 14 points, for Marblehead (6-8). Kasey Sherry had 23 points for Danvers, Delaney Zecha, 11 points and Emily McNulty, nine points.

Danvers (9-6) led by nine points with at the five-minute mark of the fourth quarter. Marblehead went on a 7-0 run to trim the deficit to two, but the Falcons’ Ashley Arnoldy (6 points, 12 rebounds) hit a big shot to bump up the lead for good.
