The Marblehead High boys hockey team captured at least a share of the Northeastern Conference Small title Wednesday with a 5-0 win over Swampscott at Salem State’s Rockett Arena.The Magicians are 13-3 overall and 6-0 in the NEC Small. A win over Lynn or Salem in their next two games would give the defending champs the title once again.Tom Koopman scored in the first period to give Marblehead a 1-0 lead. Two quick goals in the second period, one by Tim Kalinowski and the other by Matt Koopman, gave Marblehead some breathing room. Swampscott had a 5-on-3 power play late in the second period, but couldn’t convert. Tim Koopman scored his second goal of the game in the third period. Trevor Jones also had a goal.Harrison Young picked up his fourth shutout for Marblehead.”It was a big game for both teams. Swampscott has a great team,” Marblehead coach Bob Jackson said.Swampscott coach Gino Faia said Marblehead came on strong in the second and third periods to put the game away.”In the second and third periods they were winning the one-on-one battles,” he said. “They outplayed us and outhustled us.”Swampscott is 11-5 overall, 4-2 in the NEC Small.In other NEC action, Danvers defeated Saugus 6-0.Marshfield 4, St. Mary’s 2At Lynn, the Spartans played even with Marshfield for the first two periods. It was 0-0 after the first and 2-2 at the end of the second. The Spartans seemed to run out of gas late in the game and Marshfield took advantage. St. Mary’s coach Mark Lee praised his team’s performance.”Marshfield is one of the top teams in the state, and we played even with them for the majority of the game. Despite a few breakdowns at the end of the game, this was a very competitive and tight game,” Lee said.Nick Holt had a strong game in net for the Spartans. St. Mary’s is now 5-10-2.Revere 3, Salem 1At Revere, the Patriots recorded their first victory of the season (1-13-1). Revere coach Joe Ciccarello was very happy for his team.”It was nice to get this monkey off our backs. We have been in some close games lately; it was nice to come out on top in this one. It has been a tough season this year, but my boys never quit working hard and it was great to see them play a complete game,” Ciccarello said.The Patriots took a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period. Revere added a goal in the second period to push the lead to two (3-1). The Patriots were led by junior forward Marco Mazzarelli (2 goals, 1 assist). Senior forward Shane Cambria scored one goal for the Patriots. Patriot senior goalie Tom Papasodora got the support he needed in net, while having another solid performance (30 saves).St. John’s 4, Arlington Catholic 0At Arlington, the Eagles (14-2) soared to a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period. St. John’s had four different players find the back of the net (Jimmy Currier, Paul Crehan, Brian Pinho and Jack McCarthy). Billy Price had a strong performance in net for the Eagles (24 saves).Winthrop 2, Gloucester 0At Gloucester, it was a 0-0 tie at the end of the first period. The Vikings exploded for two goals in the second period. Nolan Parisi had a solid game in net for the Fishermen (22 saves). Gloucester is 6-8-1.Williams 8, Fenwick 2At Williams, freshman Matt Townsend had a solid game for the Crusaders (2 assists). Drew Thibodeau and Eric Giguere had strong performances for Fenwick as well. Fenwick is now 3-13.
