The English girls basketball team had no problem dismantling Beverly Thursday night, as the Bulldogs defeated the Panthers 68-47 at Beverly.English came sprinting out of the gates, as the Bulldogs scored 24 points in the first quarter. English tightened up its defense in the second quarter, and took a comfortable 40-22 lead into the half. English coach Fred Hogan was very pleased with his team’s performance.”The girls played really well tonight. They came out firing on offense and were very stout on defense for most of the game,” Hogan said.Leading the way for the Bulldogs was Deidra Newson, who recorded a double-double (19 points, 12 rebounds). Makayla Everette (12 points), Diondra Woumn (10 points) and Catherine Stinson (12 points) all scored in double figures for the Bulldogs.English (16-2 overall, 13-1 league) has a big showdown against Peabody next Tuesday, as the NEC Large will be on the line that night.”I am looking forward to next Tuesday. I know we will be in for a battle, but my girls will be ready,” Hogan said.Danvers 52, Saugus 27At Danvers, the Falcons (11-6) put their defensive clamps on the Sachems, as Danvers led 24-10 at the half. The Danvers bench put in a big effort, led by Hannah Llewellyn (10 points) and Devon Walsh (10 points). Danvers coach Patrick Veilleux was very happy with his team’s defense.”The girls as a group played great on the defensive side of the ball today. They really were intense from beginning to end,” Veilleux said.Norma Waggett scored 11 points for Saugus.Notre Dame 57, Tech 25At Tech, the Tigers found themselves down early, and could never fully recover. Leading the way for Tech was senior Tori Park (10 points), who played solid defense throughout. Tech is now 5-12.Gloucester 46, Swampscott 19At Gloucester, the Big Blue trailed 21-10 at the half. Swampscott was unable to make any headway against the Fishermen. Leading the way for the Big Blue was Alex Goldman (13 points). Swampscott is now 6-10.
