Hockey: Butler nets a pair in St. Mary’s win

St. Mary’s senior Alison Butler celebrated her 18th birthday by scoring two goals and assisting on another in a 3-1 win over Fontbonne Academy Wednesday at Connery Rink.The productive night puts the St. Anselm-bound Butler at a lofty 27 goals and 21 assists for the season. The Spartans (13-3-2, 4-1 CCL) play for the Catholic Central League title tonight when they face Austin Prep. With a win they can take it outright. A tie would mean they would share it with Arlington Catholic and a loss would give the Cougars the championship.”They (Fontbonne) are very physical. It was a tough game. We knew we had our hands full,” St. Mary’s coach Frank Pagliuca said.Butler gave St. Mary’s a 1-0 lead in the first period with Kaleigh Finigan assisting. In the second period, it was Finigan from Butler and Amanda Donohoe. After missing on a penalty shot in the third period, Butler came back a few minutes later with her second goal of the night, unassisted.GIRLS HOCKEYWinthrop 7, Marblehead 1At Larsen Rink, the Bulldawgs (8-4-4) had no problem finding the back of the net. Senior captain Kara Donati (1 goal, 2 assists) had a good game, as did Flora English (2 goals). Caroline McKinnon (2 goals, 2 assists); Gabby Kenniston (goal) and Jillian Olevitz (goal). Goalie Gretchen Howard had a solid game in between the pipes for the Bulldawgs. Rachael McKay scored the lone goal for Marblehead while goalie Aly Hopkins came through with 18 saves.BOYS HOCKEYSwampscott 3, Revere 0At Rockett Arena, the Big Blue (13-5) had first period goals from Devon Wall (his first varsity goal) and Corey Carmody and added a little cushion when Nunzio Moretti scored from Chris Dandreo midway through the final period. Tristan Bradley (9 saves) picked up his third shutout. Revere goalie John Papasodora had an outstanding game with 43 saves.Beverly 4, Danvers 2At Rockett Arena, the Panthers (14-0-1) shook off the rust from a 10-day layoff and jumped out to a 4-0 lead on goals by Connor Irving, Jake Straw, Nate McLaughlin and Andrew Irving. Danvers scored both its goals late in the game.Bishop Stang 2, Marblehead 1At New Bedford, Bishop Stang goalie Ryan Hubert threw up a wall in front of the net, stopping 69 shots. Bishop Stang took a 1-0 lead in the first period, but Trip Franzese scored from Liam Gillis and Tom Koopman in the second period to tie things up. Bishop Stang scored the game-winner later in the period. Marblehead goalie Myles Barry had 17 saves.St. John’s 8, Fenwick 1At Fenwick, leading the way for the Crusaders (3-14) were senior defensemen P.J. Usalis and senior forward Jake Brennan.Gloucester 2, Peabody 1At Gloucester, the Tanners (4-11-2) struck first on a Reed Foster goal, but Gloucester tied the game right before the end of the first period. The Fishermen scored the game-winner early in the third period. Peabody outshot Gloucester 41-23. Defenseman Cam Smullen and forward Owen Brewster played well for the Tanners.North Reading 4, Lynnfield 1At Lynnfield, leading the way for the Pioneers (2-13-1) was freshmen Rob LoConte, who scored the lone goal for Lynnfield. LoConte has scored five goals in his last four games. Fellow freshmen Matt Miller had a strong performance on the defensive side.
