Boys Hoop: Saugus loses tough one late

It was a tale of two halves in the Saugus and Winthrop boys’ basketball game Thursday night.The Sachems came out of the gate fast, but the Vikings were able to weather the storm and steal the game late, 65-64, at Winthrop.The Sachems led 43-26 at the end of the first half. The Vikings outscored the Sachems, 39-21, in the second half. Saugus had two shots at the buzzer – a three-pointer and a two-point shot – but missed on both attempts. Leading the way for Saugus was Shane Ripley (20 points, 12 rebounds). Saugus finished the season 10-10.Marblehead 55, Swampscott 50At Marblehead, Swampscott led 28-21 at the half. Marblehead dominated the third quarter, and tied the game 36-36 going into the final frame. It was a back and forth game in the final frame, according to Swampscott coach Justin Fucile.”My boys left it all out there tonight. They played their tails off tonight and just ran out of gas late. I am so proud of them,” Fucile said.Leading the way for Swampscott (7-12) was the senior trio of Val Temin (20 points), Danny Trentsch (12 points) and Steve Bowers (10 points).Cathedral 56, Fenwick 45At Fenwick, it was a tight game throughout, as the Crusaders cut the Cathedral lead to just four going into the final quarter (41-37). Fenwick just ran out of gas late in the game. Leading the way for the Crusaders was Matt Costello (12 points, 10 rebounds). Fenwick is now 6-12.Peabody 55, Revere 49At Revere, the Tanners (7-13) had three players in double figures with Jared McCarron leading the way with 18 points; Steve Leavitt with 16 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two assists; and Matt Correale with 11 points. Leavitt had his best game of the season, coach Thad Broughton said. McCarron hit three free throws in the final 30 seconds to ice the win. Gio Gomez had 13 points for Revere and Tommy Sor, 11.
