Butler, Van Burkirk score two apiece for St. Mary’s girls

Alison Butler and Vanessa Van Buskirk scored two goals apiece as the St. Mary’s girls hockey team moved to 15-3-1 with a 6-0 win over Winchester Sunday.Also scoring for St. Mary’s were Amanda Donohoe (who also had two assists) and Gabby Crugnale (2 assists as well).Brittany McPherson played in net for the Spartans, getting the shutout with eight saves.”It was one of our best efforts of the season,” coach Frank Pagliuca said. “We really finished some chances in the third period, and we had two power play goals (both by Van Buskirk).St. Mary’s closes out its regular season at the Hingham Tournament, against Duxbury Tuesday and Lexington Thursday.Cambridge 5, Marblehead 3At Connery Rink, Lynn, the Magicians staged a furious third-period rally to get to within a goal when Brittany Smith, with assists from Rachel McKay and Brittany Lydon, with a minute left. However, Nicole Giampa completed her hat trick with an empty-netter with five seconds to go in the game.Cambridge led 2-0 after two on goals by Giampa and Bella Corcione.But Meg Gray pulled the Magicians to within in goal with only 1:24 gone in the third period. However, Giampa and Corcione scored a little over a minute a part late in the period to give the Falcons what seemed to be a comfortable 4-1 lead. But McKay and Smith pulled the Magicians back into the game.Beverly 1, Masconomet 1Nicole Woods’s tying goal with 1:50 left clinched the Northeastern Confrence title for the Panthers (14-0-2).BOYS BASKETBALLSt. Mary’s 69, Williams 58At Williams, Tom Deveau took care of the scoring, leading the way with 22 while Matt Manning did all the inside work – including pulling down 12 rebounds – as the Spartans moved to 11-7.Also hot for St. Mary’s were Kyle DiFilippo (14 points) and Dennis Bailer (13).”Every win at this point is a big win for us,” said Spartan coach Kevin Moran, whose team is fighting for tournament seeding.St. Mary’s will play in the Brad Sheridan tournament in Marblehead this week.Match 53, KIPP 48At KIPP, the Panthers fell to 9-7 overall and 6-6 in their league. Dave Metelus had 12 points and five steals to lead KIPP, followed by Sheniel Garcia and Josh Puati, both of whom had 11. Garcia also had 16 rebounds and two blocks.Desi D’Oleo had five assists and three steals.GIRLS BASKETBALLLexington 41, Revere 30The Lady Patriots (11-8) fell behind by double digits in the second half and they fell short in their comeback attempt in the first round of the Spartan Classic’s Division 1 game at St. Mary’s.Revere held a 14-13 lead at halftime, but Lexington went on an 18-5 spurt and outscored the Patriots 18-10 in the third quarter. Lexington’s Kristyn Kajko had 12 points in the quarter.”We had a lead going into the third quarter,” said Revere head coach Katelyn Leonard. “We got into foul trouble early in the third quarter so it made our substitutions a little more difficult and it made us play a little more hesitant on defense.”Revere trailed 33-28, but Lexington (15-4) went on an 8-2 run in the final four minutes of the game. Lexington scored their final baskets in transition as Revere tried to crash the boards in order to get back in the game.”They had an answer for everything,” said Leonard. “I’m proud of the girls, but we probably shot about 20%.
