Roundup: Peabody boys hockey stuns Beverly

Taking the lead in the third period, the Peabody High boys hockey team stunned previously undefeated Beverly, 5-3, in the Carlin Memorial game at Peabody on Monday.”It was a big upset,” Tanners coach Mark Leonard said. “Beverly was undefeated and the No. 1 team in the state for Division 2. We’re pretty excited, that’s for sure. We have a young team. It’s great.”Beverly (15-1-1) took a 2-0 lead after first-period goals by Andrew Irving and Graham Doherty. Peabody cut the lead in half on Matt McIsaac’s goal later in the period.The Tanners tied it in the second on Mike Vadala’s tally, then took the lead for good 31 seconds into the third when Andrew Bisconti found the net. Ryan Carney and Erik Hennessy scored insurance goals before Connor Irving of Beverly closed out the scoring at 13:58.Joe Powers made 29 saves for Peabody (6-11-2). Bryce Mitchell stopped 21 shots for Beverly.The game is played in memory of former Peabody coach Charles Carlin, with a trophy presented to the winner.”It’s something we can build on for the rest of the year, and for next year,” Leonard said.Lynn Jets 5, Latin Academy 2At Matthews Arena in Boston, Ryan MacDonald and Kyle Devin each scored a goal and two assists as the Jets raised their record to 8-10-1. Goalie Mike Gately made 15 saves.The Jets led 2-1 after a period, but scored two unanswered goals in the second, by Brett Erelli and Mark Brazell, to put the game away. MacDonald, who scored to give the Jets a 1-0 lead in the first period, assisted on both second-period goals.Also scoring for Lynn was Tony Uva.”It was a good opportunity to skate all four lines,” coach Joe Conlon said. “Everyone put in a solid effort.”Lynn’s final game of the season is Wednesday at Concord-Carlisle.Rockport 5, Revere 2At Revere, Zack Ciampa and Shane Cambria scored for the Patriots (2-15-1).GIRLS HOCKEYM’head 10, Peabody 3At Salem State, Marblehead got multiple goals from Brittany Smith (2), Olivia Fusegni (2) and Rachel McKay (2), with four other players also scoring single goals: Emily Parker, Abby Dimare, Meg Gray and Sydney Cresta.Sophia Post scored twice for Peabody with Courtney Cavanaugh also finding the net.Marblehead goalies Sabrina Doughman and Aly Hopkins split time in net, stopping 10 shots. Peabody goalie Jillian McCormick stopped 21 shots.GIRLS BASKETBALLPeabody 51, Chelmsford 37At Woburn, Olivia Summit (12 points), Amanda Matthews (11) and Courtney Bua (10) all finished in double figures for the Tanners in the consolation game of the Woburn Tournament.The Tanners led 22-18 at the break, then opened it up in the third quarter, when Summit scored 10 of her 12 points.”They had no answer in the third for her inside presence,” Tanners coach Jane Heil said.Bua was named to the all-tournament team. In the Tanners’ opening game of the tournament, a 64-46 loss to Somerville on Sunday, she scored 22 points and pulled down six rebounds. She went 6-for-8 on free throws. Carolyn Scacchi added 12 points and seven boards, while Alexandra Lomasney and Sara Hosman scored four points each.Peabody finished the regular season 16-4, which Coach Heil noted was a “big turnaround” from the 7-13 campaign of last season.BOYS BASKETBALLArlington 61, Fenwick 38At Melrose, in the Melrose Tournament, Joe Buccheri led the Crusaders (6-19) with 14 points and four steals. Matt Costello added eight points and seven rebounds for Fenwick, which plays in the consolation today (5 p.m.).Gr. Lawrence 56, Tech 28At North Andover, the Tigers fell to 4-15.
