The Swampscott boys hockey team had no problem taking care of West Springfield, 4-1, at Salem State on Wednesday. With the win, the Big Blue finished 15-5, which was tied with the 1989-90 team for the best regular season in Swampscott history.”This is such a great accomplishment for this group of boys,” Swampscott coach Gino Faia said. “These kids worked hard day in and day out. I couldn’t ask any more from these kids.”The Big Blue were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period. Swampscott dominated the second period and skated to a 3-1 lead at the end of two periods. There was no scoring in the second period. The Falcons tied the game 1-1 early in the third period. Peabody retook the lead (2-1) two minutes later, when Pat Ruotolo scored. Reed Foster added an empty net goal for the Tanners. Joe Powers played a near perfect game in net for the Tanners (39 saves). Peabody will play in the Newburyport Classic Final against Lincoln-Sudbury Friday night.Beverly 3, Lynnfield 0At McVann-O’Keefe Rink, the Panthers had goals by Jake Straw, Ted Leathersich and Andrew Irving.WRESTLINGDivision 3 State TournamentIn the Division 3 state individual tournament at Wakefield High School, Marblehead-Swampscott’s Jake Powell finished second at 126 pounds, defeating Dedham’s Eric Reyes, 8-5. Powell’s teammate, Sean Taylor, took sixth at 285 pounds. Both will compete in the all-states Friday and Saturday at Salem High School.Lynnfield finished with 63 1/2 points to take 10th out of 53 teams. The Pioneers had several wrestlers qualify for the all-states. Eric Kerr took third at 113 pounds, Andrew Kibarian, third at 285 pounds; Tom Arsenault, sixth at 220 pounds and Lucas Pascucci, seventh at 126 pounds.TRACKAt the US Track and Field’s Massachusetts Scholastic weight throw championship at the Reggie Lewis Center, Bishop Fenwick’s Patrick Corcoran finished second with a throw of 55 feet. The winner, Gabe Arcaro of Burlington High School, had a throw of 58 feet.In the girls competition, Fenwick’s Maggie Lepley of Lynn finished second with a throw of 38 feet, nine inches. The winner, Elizabeth Tavnan from Notre Dame Academy of Hingham, won with a throw of 39 feet. Carolyn Claveau of Fenwick took third with a national qualifying toss of 34 feet.Corcoran, Claveau and Lepley will all compete in the New Balance Indoor Nationals in New York City.
