SAUGUS – It?s been almost two months since former Saugus Library worker Linda Duffy was sentenced to five years in jail for stealing $800,000.And while Duffy was supposed to report to prison by Feb. 22, her attorney, Fred Riley, said that date was moved to March 11 after filing a motion with the court.?She was being treated for C. dif,” said Riley. “It?s a highly infectious disease. We filed a motion with the court which allowed. We had the doctors diagnosis and treatment that the infection was in fact real.”According to the Mayo Clinic website, Clostridium difficile, which is often referred to as C. dif, is a bacterium that can cause symptoms ranging from diarrhea to life-threatening inflammation of the colon. Illness from C. difficile most commonly affects older adults in hospitals or in long term care facilities and typically occurs after use of antibiotic medications.Riley said he didn?t know the status of Duffy?s health as of Monday.A federal judge sentenced Duffy to five years in prison on Jan. 10 after she pleaded guilty in September to four counts of mail fraud, 10 counts of money laundering and one count of aggravated identity theft.Federal agents arrested Duffy on Dec. 7, 2011 for stealing close to $1 million in fees and donations from both the Saugus Library and the GE Foundation.Matt Tempesta can be reached at [email protected].
