SWAMPSCOTT – Sean Greene said he still remembers how powerful he felt when he bought a meal with his first paycheck.?It was a change in attitude, a change in mind,” he said. “You feel like you?re really part of the world.”It?s that memory that drove Greene, program director at Triangle Inc., to collaborate with Swampscott Institute of Vocational Training?s Pat Gorham to teach special education students job training and career skills in a new program called The Northshore Bridges to Successful Careers. The program, which combines Gorham?s six “diverse learner” students and Greene?s 18 students from Triangle, all with varying levels of disability, meets once a month at the Swampscott Senior Center. The courses include topics such as “Workforce Attitudes and Behaviors” and “Problem Solving for Young Adults” that complement the Swampscott institute?s internships at local businesses and institutions including Stop & Shop, the Jesmond Nursing Home and Swampscott Public Library.?It?s great to see students in the community with a meaningful job,” said Gorham. The program works with students ages 19 to 22 from Swampscott, Nahant, Salem, Malden, Lynn, Peabody and Everett in transitioning from special education programs to graduation. “It?s getting students ready to take the next step,” said Greene. After the age of 22, students can move on to work at Triangle, a nonprofit based in Salem that helps those referred by the Department on Disability Services to find work in the community.Triangle?s Jennifer Killeen said at an open house on Thursday that employers find participants make some of the best hires for small jobs. “They have good work ethic and are dependable,” she said. “They truly want to work.”Between the collaboration at Northshore Bridges and his work at Triangle, Greene said his goal isn?t just to land a job for his clients, it?s to find them a job they love – tough job market and disability aside. “I want to know what their unreachable dream job is,” he said. “Then we look at how close we can get there in reality, and we go for that.”Kait Taylor can be reached at [email protected].
