NAHANT – Nahant selectmen voted to keep the town?s contribution for employee?s health insurance at 68 percent for the year 2013 -2014.Town Administrator Andy Bisignani said the insurance advisory group, comprised of union representatives and insurance experts, had unanimously voted to keep the rates of health insurance the same as long as there was discussion to make the plan more affordable for both the town and the employees for the following year. Bisignani said he would be meeting with the state insurance provider to work on plans that would be more beneficial over the next year.Selectman Richard Lombard said he didn?t think a 68 percent contribution by the town was enough, comparing the rates to surrounding towns like Lynn that contributed 90 percent. He was concerned that town employees would leave to work in other towns to get the rates with the cost of living increasing. “I think it?s a good time to give them a thank you and hopefully next year when we negotiate contracts with benefits we can get them 80 percent,” he said.Chairman Michael Manning said comparing town benefit plans was “apples and oranges” because plans in towns contributing more could have higher co-pays and deductibles.Selectman Perry Barrasso reminded Lombard that fire and police representatives unanimously voted to continue the current plan. Before agreeing to the motion of 68 percent, Lombard said he would “go after this next year.”Kait Taylor can be reached at [email protected].
