SWAMPSCOTT – Swampscott athletes will have to wait another year before defending a synthetic home turf.Though the Athletic Field Study Committee announced a goal to get a $1.45 million turf field on the 2013 Town Warrant at a selectmen’s meeting March 6, Finance Committee Vice Chairman Linso Vanderburg cleared the air last Tuesday when he said the committee was choosing to keep it off the warrant for one more year.”It makes sense to push it off for a year,” said Vanderburg. “They are running short of time for proper marketing to the Town Meeting members, and they don’t want to leave an impression that they are trying to slide it in at the last minute.”Vanderburg said the committee would be making a presentation at Town Meeting on May 6.The multi-sport synthetic turf at Phillips Park would require $1.45 million in funds from the town in addition to grants and private donations to provide the $630,000 for the light towers and home stands as part of its three-phase plan.Field Study Committee Chairman Christian Urbano added that the field could bring in about $15,000 in revenue when rented out, in addition to withstanding wear and tear from the town’s 1,400 youth and high school athletes.Kait Taylor can be reached at [email protected].
