NAHANT – The Open Space Committee is planning a presentation on barrier beaches to educate town voters about environmental issues at Short Beach.Chairman Linda Pivacek said she spoke to the Coastal Zone Management and the Department of Environmental Protection, and they agreed to come down and take a look at Nahant?s beaches to get an evaluation about its environmental features. With the vote for the Short Beach Master Plan at Town Meeting looming in the future, Pivacek said, “Even the expert (from Stantec) isn?t sure of everything, but there are certainly a lot of opinions running around town. We need to educate. We have to have informed decisions.”Committee members said some of the things that need to be discussed include the type of grass that needs to be put on the dunes for stabilization, and what can and can?t be put on the dunes since the memorial benches were found to be illegal.Pivacek said the town was running out of space with the popularity of memorial benches. “The park benches are going overboard,” said Pivacek. “Someone needs to manage them.”Committee member Julie Stoller suggested people plant a tree in their departed loved one?s name. “But they don?t last forever,” she said.?Nothing lasts forever,” said Pivacek, pointing to the damage that benches endured during the coastal surges from the season?s storms.Pivacek said she wants to hold a meeting with the Open Space Committee, the Conservation Committee, the Planning Board and the Town Administrator to talk about the observations of the two agencies. The date for the meeting is to be determined.Kait Taylor can be reached at [email protected].
