Bishop Fenwick boys basketball coach Mike Kane has stepped down after five years as head coach of the Crusaders.
Kane said it became increasingly difficult to balance coaching, his family (he has two daughters, ages five and three) and his job in Boston with Blue Cross/Blue Shield.
“It was a difficult decision for me,” Kane said. “It came down to work and family and just not having enough time to commit to all three. I love Fenwick. I love basketball and I love coaching.”
Fenwick athletic director Dave Woods said Kane will always be a part of the Bishop Fenwick basketball program.
“Mike has been awesome. He’s such a great representative of Fenwick. He’s been more loyal to this school and the basketball program than anyone I’ve known,” Woods said.
Kane’s connection with Fenwick basketball dates back to his playing days. In 1995, his senior year, the Crusaders went 19-4. Sean Connolly, Kane’s predecessor in the head coaching job, was a freshman on that team. Kane went on to play four years at Salve Regina.
Even during his college playing days, Kane would come back and help out with the team when he could. He served as an assistant coach under Mike O’Brien, Jim Silvio and Connolly before taking the head-coaching job.
“I loved it,” Kane said about his years of coaching. “We had some really good times and I made some really good friendships. It was a pleasure making all these connections with the players and their families I hope to always be a part of Fenwick basketball and will support them in future. It was just time for me to move on, get some new blood in there.”
Woods said he’ll try and get the position filled as quickly as possible.
