Spring snow doesn’t bother this columnist

It’s spring and it’s snowing! I know a lot of you might think I’m crazy but I love it because I love to ski and more is better as far as I am concerned. The last two storms really helped the local and not-so-local ski mountains. At Wachusett Mountain Ski Area, the Olympic torch continued to burn last weekend where The Nashoba Shooting Stars alpine ski team once again competed in The Special Olympics Massachusetts Winter Games. This team walked away with plenty of gold, silver and bronze! Even with bright sunny skies, ideal snow conditions prevailed throughout the weekend on the race course. In preparation for the events, this ski team of 25 determined athletes train for three months, two to three times a week, on the slopes of Nashoba Valley, Gunstock and Mount Sunapee to compete in the sport they adore. What a show the team put on for parents and spectators as they put all of their skill on the line. The result was that almost all of our athletes won a medal, with some scoring up to 3 medals because they can compete in all 3 events of slalom, giant slalom, and downhill. These inspiring special athletes, as well as all of the other athletes competing in the various venues throughout the Worcester area, put their heart and soul into these events – and it showed.uGabriella Foley from Swampscott and Ryan Horrigan from Marblehead competed again this year. Both athletes successfully navigated the race courses to win medals in their events. Gabriella took home the Gold medal in her Giant Slalom event and Silver medals in both the Slalom and Downhill alpine race. Ryan scored a Bronze medal in his Giant Slalom event. Congratulations to Gabriella and Ryan!uOur annual winter ski getaway to Jackson, N.H. came together this St Patrick’s Day weekend as we enjoyed the hospitality of our hosts, Joan and Ernie. This year we had a couple of newcomers Lex and Jill and Jim and Deanna from Maine. On Friday, we shot up to Wildcat where we all met and had a wild day on the slopes. We skied corduroy fresh tracks until lunch. The snow was pristine and temperatures were in the low 20s with bright sun. It was truly a ’10’day. The slopes were empty with no lift wait at all. The conditions stayed good until early afternoon when it was time to quit anyway. Snowshoeing and scrabble filled the void for those that did not care to tackle the slopes. At the end of the day we all met at a local tavern for an après ski drink followed by a great dinner where we shared skiing and snowshoeing memories with some wonderful people. Thanks again JEMuLooking for something to do this week?
