LYNN — LaToyia Edwards, Emmy award-winning primary evening news anchor for NECN, will serve as the Master of Ceremonies for the Girls Inc. luncheon to be held on Thursday, April 11 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Danversport Yacht Club.

Ms. Edwards stated, “I am delighted to be asked back to the Girls Inc. of Lynn 25th Anniversary Luncheon. The organization does an incredible job giving the girls the tools to believe in themselves and enabling them to be Strong, Smart and Bold. At last year’s luncheon, I was impressed by the passion and commitment of the volunteers, donors and staff. The luncheon had such a powerful effect on me that this year, I am bringing my own daughter.”

Ms. Edwards joined the NECN family as a morning reporter in 2005, arriving from WWLP-22 in Springfield, where she had been a weekday anchor. A native of Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood, Edwards graduated with high honors from Emerson College with a degree in Broadcast Journalism. She began her career as a news writer for WBZ-1030AM radio, and later reported for the Fox affiliate WICZ-TV 40 in Binghamton, N.Y.

She first anchored television for MediaOne cable news network, while also reporting as the morning drive news anchor for WILD 1090AM. Additionally, Edwards has instructed courses for the Connecticut School of Broadcasting. In 2002, Edwards was crowned Miss Massachusetts in the USA pageant. She is married and volunteers with youth groups.

Girls Inc. is celebrating both its 70th anniversary and its 25th celebration luncheon. In addition to hosting the event, Ms. Edwards will be presenting awards to the recipients of the Girls Hero scholarships. In honor of the occasion, the program will also include a special presentation by Judith Vredenburgh, the CEO and president of Girls Inc. National. In addition, the Girls Inc. Chorus will be performing a special concert.

Each day at Girls Inc. of Lynn, hundreds of young girls and teens arrive at the center to spend the afternoon with their friends in a safe, nurturing environment. Girls Inc. of Lynn is committed to helping girls grow strong, smart and bold by providing innovative and educational programs at the center, in schools and at other youth agencies. These research-based curricula, delivered by trained professionals, equip girls to achieve academically, lead healthy and physically active lives, manage money, navigate media messages, and discover an interest in science, technology, engineering and math. The Girls Inc. experience prepares girls with the appropriate tools to overcome gender, economic and social barriers, and grow into healthy, educated and independent adults.

Over 500 members of the community come together at the annual luncheon to celebrate the accomplishments of the amazing young women who have overcome numerous challenges to achieve success and win the scholarships that enable them to attend college.
