LYNN – A Bailey Street homeowner was brought to the hospital after a failed attempt to rescue his dog from a fire at his home on Sunday left him with glass in his arm.Neighbor Marianne Kelleher, who called 911 when she saw smoke pouring out of the chimney and roof of 27 Bailey Street at 11:48 a.m., said the homeowner is a Lynn police officer and his wife is pregnant with their second child, though firefighters would not release any names.Lynn Fire District Chief Jack Barry said the family was not at home at the time of the fire, but the homeowner arrived in time to assist firefighters in an attempt to call the dog out of the building. “We attempted to lure the dog to the window, but the glass broke and he got cut,” said Barry on Sunday.Barry said Atlantic Ambulance crews attempted to revive the dog but were unsuccessful.Barry estimated the damage to the home to be $100,000, with heavy smoke and water damage to the second floor, where he said firefighters stopped the flames after an hour. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but Barry said it looked to be accidental.Though Sunday?s fire was one of three structure fires that took place in Lynn in the last week, Barry said it was unrelated to both the arson on 145 Lewis Street on Monday, March 25, which displaced about 80 residents, and the “suspicious” fire on Thursday, March 28 on Lyman Street that displaced 28 people.Kelleher said after she dialed the fire department, she tried to kick the back door in to release the dog, a mixed breed that she said was named Diesel. She added that she knew the family?s cat did escape the fire because she saw him run up the street.American Red Cross spokesperson Kat Powers said the organization had not been contacted by the family or firefighters as of Sunday evening.Kait Taylor can be reached at [email protected].
