NAHANT – Nahant residents are getting ready to roll up their sleeves for a town-wide cleanup this Saturday.Organized by local group 01908, the cleanup will focus on the widely used recreation areas at Short Beach, Tudor Beach, Forty Steps Beach, Canoe Beach, Town Wharf and Marjorum Park, Flash Road Playground, the library?s playground and Baileys Hill.01908 member Heather Goodwin, a local jewelry designer at Twigs and Heather, said these areas are still in “horrible shape” after the coastal storms over the fall and winter. “If you look close, there?s a ton of debris, plastic and bottle caps,” said Goodwin. “We need to keep animals and children safe from the things on the beach.”For the last four months, the organization has been coordinating what Goodwin said is the first town-wide cleanup that is asking for help from all of the residents in town, rather than volunteers from one organization.?Every year the baseball league assembles a park cleanup, but this is the first one I can remember that has reached out to every organization to pitch in, trying to hit every part of town,” said Goodwin.01908 is partnering with Safer Waters for Massachusetts, the Nahant Garden Club, Open Space Committee, local Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, the Beautification Committee, the Community Garden, Nahant Little League and the Council on Aging in their efforts. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, volunteers can meet either at the Coast Guard Life Saving Station at Short Beach or at any of the nine locations, where they will receive trash and recycling bags, and gloves donated by the town, to collect trash that the Department of Public Works will pick up at the end of the day.Following the cleanup, there will be an outdoor party to celebrate 01908 Earth Day at the Life Saving Station, where soup and bread will be served, and Northeastern University?s Marine Science Center will have touch tanks for the littlest volunteers. Local artists, including Goodwin, will unveil six of the painted trash cans that will be displayed for use around town.?It?s turned into a really nice community event,” said Goodwin.Keeping with their goal to fund programs for the town, 01908 will be selling “01908 Day” T-shirts for $20, but Goodwin said the day isn?t about fundraising.?It?s about making people aware of the need to pitch in together as a community,” she said. “This is just something we wanted to do just to help the town and bring people together.”Kait Taylor can be reached at [email protected].
