Sacred Heart students get chance to shine under the sea

LYNN – When Sacred Heart Principal Joanne Eagan said there would be a school wide production of “The Little Mermaid,” she wasn’t kidding.”Every child in the school has a part,” she said. “The three- and four-year-olds start the show. They come out and sing songs and get the crowd ready.”Eagan said 65 students in total make up the cast of the show Sacred Heart will present Wednesday at Lynn English High School, 50 Goodridge St., at 7 p.m.”We’ve been down there the last three or four years,” Eagan said. “It works out so nice, they have a great sound system and they’re very supportive of us.”With every child in the school participating Eagan said they needed a larger location to accommodate the parents.Students who don’t have actual roles perform songs in between scenes, Eagan said.Several of the main characters, Ariel, Sebastian the crab, Scuttle the seagull, Ursula the sea witch and King Triton, showed off their costumes Friday and their nerves of steel.Stephanie Creamer, dressed as Scuttle, said she has been performing in Sacred Heart shows since she was in the fourth grade. Now in the eighth grade she no longer gets nervous, she said.”I’m a little nervous,” admitted Caroline O’Connor. “I’ve been doing this since third grade. I still get a little nervous at first then I’m fine.””I’m nervous so you all better be nervous,” said drama teacher and director Jennifer Cimino. This is about the 10th show Cimino has directed in the six years she’s been with the school.”Jen is the one who has created this interest in drama,” said Eagan.Cimino said that was a nice thought but in reality there is a whole team that works on the production including Karen Masucci, who created the costumes, Rosemary Matthias, scenery, and Mike Lecuyer, who is in charge of all the music.”It’s a collaborative effort,” she said.Tickets for Wednesday’s performance are $10 for adults, $5 for children and will be available at the door.
