Baseball: Classical loses in extra innings

One inning after the Classical High baseball team tied the score against Everett, the Crimson Tide pushed ahead the winning run in the eighth at Fraser Field on Monday.”They made the plays,” Rams coach Mike Zukowski said. “They put the pressure on us.”Everett scored twice in the first and added single runs in the second and third innings for a 4-0 lead. Classical got two back in the bottom of the fourth and one more in the fifth to pull within 4-3.The Crimson Tide scored twice in the sixth to make it 6-3, but Classical tied it with a three-run rally in the seventh.In the eighth, Everett scored on an RBI single with one out. In the bottom of the frame, Brett Erelli singled and Damien Earp bunted him to second, but the next batter struck out and Joe Rose flied out to right, ending the game.”I said it to the guys after the game: Over the last five innings, (this was) the team I want to go to battle with every night,” Zukowski said of the Rams’ push in the middle and late innings.Jorge Perez went 2-for-4 to lead the Classical offense. Raymundo Gomez pitched the first 5.1 innings before Rose came on in relief the rest of the way.St. Mary’s 8, Austin Prep 6At Fraser Field, the Spartans scored five runs in the first inning. Jake Cassidy went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Chris Butler also had two hits with an RBI and a run. Ryan Madden got on base three times with a double, a walk, and a hit by pitch. Madden stole two bases and scored a run.Brendan Deliere was the winning pitcher, going 4.2 innings while striking out six. Victor Molle (2.1 innings) picked up the save in relief. Molle had six punchouts and gave up just two hits with one unearned run.”Molle got a big strikeout with the bases loaded in the fifth,” said St. Mary’s head coach Derek Dana.Saugus 9, Northeast 1Dom DiPesa went five innings with 10 strikeouts and he gave up one unearned run on just two hits. Dante DelTorto went 2-for-3 with a home run to put the Sachems (1-0) ahead in the second inning. DelTorto also scored three runs. Tom Trainor added three RBI.”We broke the game open in the fifth inning,” said Saugus head coach Tom Gaeta. “Shane Ripley had a key hit with the bases loaded.”Marblehead 4, Concord-Carlisle 3At Seaside Park, the Magicians won in dramatic fashion when junior Tom Koopman laced a walk-off single over the left fielder’s head in the bottom of the seventh inning.Marblehead trailed 3-0 until the fifth inning when a pair of walks and a pair of hits brought in three runs. Trey Blackmer and Jake Marsden each had an RBI on a fielder’s choice that inning.In the seventh inning, with the game tied 3-3, Blackmer reached on an error and took second on an error. He went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Marsden and scored the game-winner on Koopman’s single.Brian Daly threw 14 pitches in the seventh to pick up the win in relief. Andrew Raiser started and went three innings, yielding to Kyle Maulden, who didn’t allow a run in three innings of relief.Arlington Catholic 5, Bishop Fenwick 2At Peabody, the Crusaders (0-1) fell behind and their comeback effort fell short. Pitcher Joe Levasseur tossed five innings and allowed just four runs while striking out eight. Brian Burke walked to force in the first run in the 1st inning.St. John’s Prep 12, Central Catholic 2At Merrimack College, Mike Driscoll tossed five shutout innings and he struck out five. Dave Bornstein hit a double and a home run with 3 RBI to lead the Eagles (2-1).
