Lacrosse: St. Mary’s boys fall to Matignon

The St. Mary’s boys lacrosse team gave up a couple of early goals and lost 6-5 at Matignon on Monday.”We started a little sluggish,” said St. Mary’s head coach Shawn Anderson. “I saw some positive things.”Richard Carrigan and Cam Grenham both tallied two goals. Goalie Kyle Torosian had 9 saves in net for St. Mary’s (1-2).”Brandon Milton did a nice job on the wing,” said Anderson. “He was good on the faceoffs.”Saugus 13, Winthrop 7The Sachems improved to 3-1 with a win in their conference opener. Nick Benoit had three goals and five assists. C.J. Randolph scored four goals with three assists. Ronnie Jarosz also had a hat trick. Brandon Rolli added two goals.Salem 15, Revere 3At Revere, Revere’s Steven Piazza scored two goals in Revere’s first conference game in the history of the program. Steve Noel added the other goal for the Patriots. Goalie Doug Cingali made some excellent saves for Revere (0-2, 0-1).Danvers 8, Swampscott 5At Danvers, Shea Doyle helped the Falcons (2-0, 1-0) come from behind at halftime with a hat trick. Jay Calcagno and Matt Flynn posted two goals. Ryan Cassidy potted the other goal. For Swampscott, Griffin Hunt scored two goals.The game was tied at 5 heading into the final frame.”We allowed too much transition,” said Swampscott head coach Josh Field.St. John’s Prep 14, Malden Catholic 3At Danvers, the Eagles (2-1) jumped out to a 5-0 advantage after the first quarter. Andrew Gallahue led St. John’s with five goals. Shawn Waldron scored three goals. Goalie Dom Hooven stopped six shots for the Eagles.Gloucester 12, Peabody 9At Gloucester, Keifer Heckman scored three goals in the Tanners’ defeat. Randy Wolff and Nick Ouellette added two goals. Andrew Najjar had four takeaways on defense. The Tanners gave up three goals in the third quarter to fall behind 9-5 heading into the fourth. Their comeback attempt fell short in the final stanza.Whittier 15, Tech 1At Whittier, Antonio Guanci scored the lone goal for Tech (0-2). Goalie Ryan Lippert had 14 saves.Bishop Fenwick 11, Marian 10At Marian, the Crusaders survived a tough Marian team with senior attackman Troy Reinold (3 goals, 4 assists) leading the charge. Sophomore Kyle Russell had three goals and an assist, sophomore Mark Nalesnik, two goals, two assists, and freshman Chris Napolitano, two goals (including the first of his career). Senior P.J. Usalis notched his first of the season and Aidan Moulton had an assist. Senior goalie Jake Brennan (10 stops) picked up the win.GIRLS LACROSSEBishop Fenwick 19, Marian 4At Peabody, the Crusaders (3-2) had big games from Grace Celona and Anna Moulton, who each had six goals; Annette Ruggiero, four goals, and Caroline Crawford, Mary DiFilippo and Hanna DelTorto, one goal each. Nicole Votta (4 saves) was in net.St. Mary’s 14, Matignon 7Gabby Crugnale went on a scoring spree for the Spartans, racking up seven goals to help her team to its first win of the season. Ashley Morelli had three goals, Amanda Donahoe, two goals, and Paige Field and Ashley Gregory, one each. Gregory’s was her first in high school.Brooke Bergeron played well in net for St. Mary’s (1-3).”It was definitely good to get a little bit of confidence for the girls,” St. Mary’s coach Al Eaton said.Marblehead 12, Manchester-Essex 11At Marblehead, the Magicians led 7-4 at the half and held on for the win against a fast Manchester-Essex team that also had a good transition game. Meggie Collins (4 goals, 2 assists, 2 ground balls) and Tyler Phillips (4 goals, assist, ground ball) led the way offensively. Kiley Fisher had two goals and two assists and Pam Gregory and Emily Freedland, one goal each.
