Pet Express committed to animals, customers

Known for its comprehensive selection of pets and pet care products and a proven commitment to animals and their owners, Lynn-based Pet Express is set to expand to the South Shore this summer.

After the successful opening of satellite stores at Liberty Tree Mall in Danvers and Square One Mall in Saugus in 2009 and 2011, respectively, Pet Express plans to open a third satellite shop at South Shore Plaza.

Robert V. Mellace, who along with his brother John Mellace and sister Lucia Castle founded the business 18 years ago, said the company is on track with its growth plan.

“It’s time to expand our brand to the point where it’s common knowledge that if anyone is in the market to purchase a new member of their family, Pet Express is the right way to go,” Mellace said. “Our passion and our dedication to animals is why we’ve been able to grow.”

What began in 1995 with four workers at 599 Lynnway is a company that today employs about 60 full-time and part-time workers.

Many employees, Mellace noted, have at least 5 years on the job.

“Our motto and our philosophy has always been to educate the customer. Our loyalty is to our customers and our pets, and we make sure customers understand the responsibility they’re takng on, that owning an animal is a long-term commitment,” Mellace said. “We do not encourage impulse purchases.”

The new South Shore Plaza satellite shop, like the stores in Danvers and Saugus, will carry only puppies, while the main store at 599 Lynnway carries all types of animals and full selection of supplies and pet food.

Birds, reptiles, fish, and of course kittens and puppiles, Pet Express has all of those and more. “If it’s legal we have it,” Mellace said.
