School roundup: Saugus boys track solves Beverly

The Saugus High boys track team defeated Beverly, 74-57, Wednesday at Saugus.Ryan Clark won the 200 meters (23.7) and Kevin Powers, the 800 meters (2:05) for the Sachems and in the process, qualified for states. Saugus (2-0) also had wins from Atticus Andruchow, high jump (5-6) and Derek Joyal, javelin (127-9).Marblehead 99, English 27At Manning Field, quadruple winner Conrad Rousseau led Marblehead (2-0), taking the 400-meter hurdles (1:00.7), 110 hurdles (17.3), long jump (19-11) and triple jump (37-9). Other Marblehead winners were: Nate Fowler, mile (4:54); Chris Wiley, 100 meters (11.8) and Chris Brady, 400 meters (54.0). For English (0-2), Peter Matu took the 800 meters (2:10) and Joshua Manzanillo took the 200 meters (24.4).Xaverian 74, St. John’s 62At Xaverian, the Eagles (0-1) took the top two spots in three events (2-mile, shot put and discus). Tom O’Shea (10:10.1) won the 2-mile with Nick Fecteau (10:10.7) taking second. Evan Dombrowski (51-8) won the shot put and David Roy took second. Roy won the discus (145-1) and Dombrowski finished second (135-1).GIRLS TRACKBeverly 115, Saugus 21At Saugus, the Sachems had one winner on the day in Rachel Donovan, 100 meters (13.4). Donovan also placed third in the triple jump (30-3). Norma Waggett placed second in the high jump (4-8).In other girls track, Marblehead defeated English 117-19 behind triple winner Carlyn McGrath, who took the 400 hurdles, 200 and long jump. Mary Leggett won the discus and javelin; Anna Barrell, 2-mile; Paige Ferrucci, 800; Rebecca Unterborn, 400; Steph Lundgren, 100 hurdles; Julie Lothrop, shot put; Monica Thorne, triple jump and Lily Cummings, high jump. Marblehead also won the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relay.GIRLS LACROSSEAustin Prep 22, St. Mary’s 4At Manning Field, the Spartans (1-5) had three goals from Ashley Morelli and one from Ashley Gregory.Masco 16, Lynnfield 6At Topsfield, the Pioneers’ (0-3) Bailey Fanikos had two goals, caused four turnovers and had three ground balls. Paige MacEachern also helped out (3 goals, 6 ground balls, 4 draw controls). Goalie Jess Folkins had 11 saves.BOYS LACROSSEAustin Prep 8, St. Mary’s 0At Reading, Kyle Torosian (13 saves) played well in net for the Spartans, who fell to 1-3. They’re at Saugus on Monday.Minuteman 13, Tech 2At Lexington, Antonio Guanci and Charlie Park scored for the Tigers, who also had a strong performance from Ryan Lippert in net. Tech is 0-3.Arlington Catholic 11, Fenwick 5At Arlington, the Crusaders (2-4) had two goals from sophomore attackman Kyle Russell and single goals from Mark Nalesnik and Chris Napolitano. Senior goalie Jake Brennan (10 saves) took the loss.Beverly 9, Peabody 8At Peabody, the Tanners led 4-2 at the end of the first half. Beverly outscored Peabody 4-1 in the third quarter, and the Tanners (2-2) trailed the rest of the way. Kiefer Heckman (3 goals, 4 assists) and Nick Ouellette (3 goals, 1 assist). led Peabody.
