The English and St. Mary’s softball teams both needed seventh-inning heroics to come out on top Wednesday.English defeated Salem 5-3 at Salem in its season opener. The Bulldogs (1-0) had a 3-0 lead after five innings. Salem tied the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the sixth. Sam Holey then hit the game-winning two-run homer. The combination of Molly Cullen (6.2 innings, 3 strikeouts, 1 walk, 2 hits, 3 runs) and Brooke Holey stymied the Salem offense.”This was a great way to start the season,” English coach Alisa Fila said. “The girls played really well in the field and hit well at the plate. Molly Doyle hit the game-winning RBI single to left-center.”We knew this was going to be a really good game,” Spartans coach Colleen Newbury said. “It had the feel of a game that could take a whole long time to be decided.
