Roundup: Revere baseball wins in walk-off fashion

The Revere High baseball team looked to be cruising early on against East Boston, but in the end it was Tommy Portrait’s late-game heroics that gave the Patriots an 8-7 win Thursday at Revere.Revere sprinted to a 4-0 lead early in the game and the lead lasted until the bottom of the fourth. East Boston took advantage of nine walks to score six runs and take a 6-4 lead. The Patriots found themselves trailing 7-6 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jonathan VanBuskirk led off the inning with a double and Portrait, with a 3-0 count, decided to swing away and the result was a walk-off two-run home run.”The kids are doing special things this year,” Revere coach Nick Faggas said. “We only won one game last year. It’s great to see everyone having such great success.”Revere has now won three straight (3-3 overall).Arlington Catholic 2, Lynnfield 1At Arlington Catholic, the Pioneers left seven runners in scoring position, which proved to be the difference in the game. Lynnfield pitcher Nick Bruno had a strong performance (6 innings, 6 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned run). Arlington Catholic had a 2-0 lead through the first three innings. Lynnfield cut the lead in half in the fourth inning, when Jordan Roper led off with a single, and Bruno hit an RBI double. That was the closest the Pioneers (1-3) could get.BOYS TENNISClassical 4, Peabody 1At Classical, the Rams (3-1) took four of the possible five matches with Narith Say winning at second singles (6-0, 6-2); Nick Gonzalez, third singles (6-3, 6-1); Philip Chea-Rene Perez, first doubles (6-1, 6-3) and Eric Rondeau-Freddie Hincapie, second doubles (6-3, 6-2).BOYS LACROSSEGloucester 7, Swampscott 6 (OT)At Swampscott, the Big Blue took a slim 4-3 lead into the half. Swampscott led 6-5 in the fourth quarter. Gloucester tied the game with three minutes remaining in the final quarter. The game went into overtime, where the Fishermen struck three minutes into the extra frame. Leading the way for Swampscott was the duo of Josh Rothwell (2 goals, 2 assists) and Brian Santry (2 goals, 1 assist). Andy Covino and Alex Balleza had one goal each for the Big Blue (1-5).Winthrop 12, Lynn 4At Winthrop, Lynn (1-4) got better as the game went on but couldn’t dig its way out. Alex Amico scored two goals and Tony Uva, one in the loss. Anthony Baio was busy in net in the loss. Wes Thompson played well in the midfield.Marblehead 17, Peabody 12At Peabody, Ian Maag was a force for the Magicians (4-3), scoring seven goals and assisting on three. Trevor Jones had four goals; others helping out were Dean Fader (3 goals); Brooks Tyrrell (goal, 2 assists); Zac Cuzner (2 goals, 2 assists) and Harrison Young (4 assists). Nathan Maselek got the win in net.Keifer Heckman (3 goals, 3 assists); Josh Fiore (3 goals, 2 assists); Nick Ouellette (3 goals, assist) and Eric Hennessey (3 goals) all contributed offensively for the Tanners. Fiore, a sophomore, also had eight ground balls.Peabody will play Bishop Fenwick Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Fenwick in the Bob Danish Lacrosse Cup.Fenwick 11, Quincy 9At Quincy, the Crusaders (3-4) tuned up for Saturday night’s showdown against Peabody in the Bob Danish Lacrosse Cup with a win. Senior attackman and captain Troy Reinhold had three goals, three assists; junior attackman Kyle Russell (4 goals, 2 assists); sophomore midfielder Mark Nalesnik (3 goals, assist); freshman attackman Chris Napolitano (goal, assist) and senior captain and midfielder P.J. Usalis (goal). Captain Jake Brennan (14 saves) picked up the win.St. John’s 15, Walpole 5At Walpole, the Eagles (5-1) took a 7-2 lead into the half. Jack Sharrio led the way for St. John’s (5 goals, 1 assist). Drew O’Connell (3 goals) and Andrew Gallahue (2 goals, 4 assists) had strong performances for the Eagles.
