Roundup: Fenwick baseball outslugs Gloucester

The Fenwick baseball team found itself in a slugfest on the road against Gloucester. The Crusaders needed a five-run seventh inning to come from behind and defeat Gloucester 11-9, in the first round of the Woodman Tournament Friday afternoon.Fenwick had a 7-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Gloucester scored five runs in the sixth inning to retake the lead 9-7. Fenwick answered back in the top of the seventh inning. The Crusaders exploded for a five run inning of their own, keyed by a Brian Burke three-run home run that proved to be the game-winner. Fenwick added two more insurance runs in the frame to put the Fisherman away.”This was a good win for the boys,” said Fenwick coach Kevin Canty. “It was nice to win a game like this. We never got discouraged and just kept playing. It was a real pleasure to coach and watch.”Mike MacKensie and Jhon Olivera both scored three runs each for Fenwick. The Crusaders are now 5-1.Peabody 6, Malden Catholic 4At Malden Catholic, the Tanners were in tied 1-1, until the top of the fifth inning. Peabody scored four runs in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead. The Tanners added one more run in the top of the sixth inning to extend their lead to five (6-1). Peabody starting pitcher David Atoscilives (5.2 innings, 8 hits, 2 walks, 2 strikeouts, 4 runs) was solid for most of the game, until the bottom of the sixth inning. Malden Catholic scored three runs off Atoscilives in sixth to get back in the game (6-4). Mac McIsaac came in relief for Peabody, and recorded the final four outs to preserve the win. Mike Petrosino had a nice day at the dish for Peabody (2-4, RBI). Peabody is now 6-1.Beverly 10, No. Middlesex 0At Beverly, the Panthers had no problems finding an offensive punch, as they sprinted to a 6-0 lead through two innings. Beverly pitcher Cam Rogers did not need much run support in this one. Rogers surrendered a double in the first inning, and then blanked Middlesex the rest of the way (7 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs). Leading the way for the Panther offense was the trio of Anthony DiOrio (4-4, 4 runs scored), Alex Toomey (4-4, 5 RBI) and Matt Hamor (2-3, 2 RBI). Beverly is now 4-2.uSt. Mary’s and Tech started their game at 10 p.m. but only got an inning and a half into it when it was halted. The Spartans won by forfeit.BOYS LACROSSEMystic Valley 6, St. Mary’s 5At Manning Field, St. Mary’s had a 3-1 at the end of the first half, and could have been up by even more. Mystic Valley took control of play in the second half, and outscored St. Mary’s 5-2.”We led for most of the game, but we could not put Mystic Valley away,” said St. Mary’s coach Shawn Anderson. “Give them credit, they never gave up. The good news is we are getting better and I am excited for our next game. I am really intrigued to see how the boys will respond.”Spartan goalie Kyle Torosian had another strong performance in net (13 saves). St. Mary’s (1-5) will look to change its luck Saturday morning against Lynnfield.GIRLS LACROSSEIpswich 13, Fenwick 10At Ipswich, Fenwick trailed 7-4 at the half, but did not go away quietly. The Crusaders tied the game 8-8 more than mid way through the third quarter. Fenwick seemed to run out of gas and time against Ipswich, as the Crusaders were outscored (5-2) after being tied. Grace Celona (4 goals) led the way for Fenwick. Other goal scorers for Fenwick were: Anna Moulton, (3 goals); Annette Ruggiero, (2 goals) and Tessa McLaughlin, (1 goal). The Crusaders are now 4-4.SOFTBALLShawsheen 6, Fenwick 5At Shawsheen, the Crusaders found themselves tied 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Fenwick was not able to push Shawsheen into extra innings.”It was a good back and forth game today,” said Fenwick coach Paul Lyman. “We just made to many mental mistakes against a very good Shawsheen team. We are a young team and this is just growing pains. I know we will have better results in the near future.”Half of the runs Shawsheen scored were unearned.
