Roundup: Peabody lax tops Fenwick for Danish Cup

Peabody started fast and never let up Saturday night as the Tanners toppled Bishop Fenwick, 16-7, in the third annual Bob Danish Cup game at Donaldson Field. The game is held each year in honor of Danish, who established the city’s lacrosse program.Nick Ouellette’s goal just 30 seconds into the game, set up by Josh Fiore, got the Tanners (5-3 overall) off and running. Eric Hennessey added a first-quarter hat trick, helping Peabody open a 10-3 halftime lead.”We came out of the blocks really fast. We were ready to go and set the tone,” said coach Anthony O’Donnell.Senior Keifer Heckman, who will play lacrosse at the University of Southern New Hampshire, continued his torrid start to the season with three goals and four assists. Heckman now has 33 goals and 56 points this year and is just nine points shy of breaking the school career scoring mark of 225 points set in 2003 by current Peabody assistant coach Greg Welch. Heckman could also threaten Welch’s single-season mark of 110 points.Ouellette added three goals and three assists, giving him 42 points on the year, while the sophomore Fiore had three goals and three assists and was selected Game MVP. Goalie Evan Connolly finished with 12 saves.Goaltender Jake Brennan was selected Game MVP for Fenwick (3-5).Marblehead 11, Newburyport 7At Newburyport, the Magicians (5-3) picked up a solid non-league win Sunday night, paced by Brooks Tyrell (3 goals, assist) and Trevor Jones (3 goals). Ian Maag contributed two goals and an assist, Dean Fader notched two goals, Zac Cuzner had a goal and Harrison Young added three assists. Goalie Nathan Maselek turned back 17 shots.Swampscott 17, Saugus 3At Endicott College, the Big Blue (2-5) cruised behind Jack Gignan, who had three goals and five assists while winning 70 percent of his faceoffs. Kevin Marescalchi (four) and Devin Wall (three) had multi-goal games while Rob Driscoll netted his first varsity goal and Brian Santry, Ed Copino, Jack Dishman, Evan Conroy, Josh Rothwell and Griffin Hunt had a goal each.Arl. Cath. 8, St. Mary’s 0At Manning Field, senior captain and goalie Kyle Torosian made 21 saves for the Spartans (0-5) on Sunday.Lynnfield 15, St. Mary’s 3At Lynnfield, the host Pioneers (3-2) rolled behind four goals and an assist from sophomore attacker Matt Boehner on Saturday.BASEBALLGeorgetown 3, Lynnfield 1At Lynnfield, the Pioneers (1-4) endured a tough-luck loss against the unbeaten Royals (5-0). Jordan Roper’s sacrifice fly chased home Traverse Briana (double) for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning but that was the extent of Lynnfield’s offense. The Pioneers stranded runners in scoring position in each of the next four innings. Greg Basilesco allowed just three hits and one unearned run but Georgetown parlayed two hits and two errors into three runs in the sixth inning.”We played very good defense for five innings with a couple of nice double plays and catches in the outfield. But, we just haven’t been able to get the key hits when we need them,” said coach John O’Brien.SOFTBALLCent. Cath. 6, St. Mary’s 1At Breed on Sunday morning, the Spartans (3-1) were in this one until the Raiders hit back-to-back triples with two out in the top of the seventh, breaking open a 2-1 game.The Raiders took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth, but Alison Butler hit a 2-out RBI single in the bottom of the frame to make it 2-1.Brooke L’Abbe pitched the first four innings, leaving with the score 1-0. Mia Nowicki came on in relief the rest of the way.Marblehead 7, Winthrop 1At Marblehead, the hosts broke open a one-run game Sunday with a five-run sixth inning highlighted by junior shortstop Olivia Vener’s two-run home run. Freshman Sarah Bornstein (3-for-3, double, 2 RBI) added to the attack and freshman left fielder Allison Kapoll made two stellar defensive plays and contributed a hit on offense. Michaela LeBlanc struck out six and allowed just three hits for the win.
