When your team is suffering from growing pains, playing St. Mary’s is not the tonic you need.
That was the case for Bishop Fenwick Monday night at Breed Middle School as the Spartans thumped the Crusaders, 8-2. It was a game Fenwick coach Paul Lyman thought should have been closer ”¦ and at the same time it was a game that St. Mary’s Colleen Newbury was extremely happy with.
Brooke L’Abbe went all the way for St. Mary’s, allowing only four hits, walking two and striking out seven. Offensively, she was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Also helping the Spartans’ cause were Molly Doyle (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and Alex Fisher (2-for-3, 3 RBI). St. Mary’s got 10 hits in all.
“Things seem to be going well,” Newbury said. “We’re getting good pitching and our hitting has been OK, though it could probably be more timely. We’re coming along.
“The thing with us is that we’ve had a strange start, schedule-wise. We’ll play a few games, and then sit for a few more. There’s been a lot of waiting around. I just want to get into a good rhythm of games.”
Lyman pointed to three errors as crucial in making the game such a runaway.
“We’re young and inexperienced,” he said, “and when we play good teams and they start making things happen, we make some errors. And that’s what happened today.”
Chandler Wilder had two hits and an RBI while Jennie Nasser was 1-for-3 with a run.
