Bulldog Ben Bowden found himself in a pitchers duel against Magician Brian Daley. It took eight innings to decide this one, and Bowden was able to out duel Daley 3-0 at Seaside Park Monday night.”I expected this game to be a tight low scoring game,” said English coach Joe Caponigro. “Daley for Marblehead pitched fantastic today and I was really impressed by him. Daley is only a junior too, so it’s scary to think he’s only going to get better. It’s quite a luxury to know when Bowden takes the mound he’s going to give a tremendous performance, and we needed every bit of it today.”Bowden pitched all eight innings, struck out nine, walked one, and gave up four singles. Daley was the tough-luck loser in this one (8 innings, 4 hits, 5 strikeouts, 4 walks, 3 runs, 2 earned). It was a 0-0 shutout through the first seven innings of play. English scored all three runs in the eighth inning. Lucas Harris led off the inning with a single. Andrew Napoleon and Bowden followed with walks. English has the bases loaded with one out, and Matt Merritt hits the game-winning RBI single. The Bulldogs added two insurance runs in the frame as well. English (4-5) plays Saugus Wednesday.Swampscott 17, Salem 7At Swampscott, three home runs and a stellar pitching performance by Trevor Massey helped lift to a win. Swampscott added another run in the third on a two-out single by Nunzio Moretti and in the fourth inning, Ryan January hit a two-run home run that also scored Massey, who had doubled. Nick Enos and Shane Ripley had two singles each in the sixth inning. Sachem pitcher Dom DiPesa did not need much run support, as he stymied the Rams offense (7 innings, 9 strikeouts, 1 run).”Dom did a great job mixing up his pitches and hitting his spots,” said Saugus coach Tom Gaeta. “When Dom has it going, he can beat anyone and shut down any opposing offense.”Saugus (6-4) plays English Wednesday.Fenwick 3, Arlington Cath. 2At Arlington Catholic, Fenwick trailed 1-0 at the end of the first inning, and found itself down 1-0 going into the final inning. Arlington Catholic threw the ball away twice on the Burke double, which led Burke to cross the plate and give Fenwick its first lead of the game 2-1. Mike Campatelli followed with a double, and scored a very important insurance run on a Jhon Oliviera RBI single (3-1). Fenwick pitcher Andrew Lessard went the first five innings (1 run, 3 hits, 4 strikeouts).
