In a back-and-forth game heavy on offense, the Lynnfield High baseball team held off Triton, 11-10, at Lynnfield on Tuesday.”Quite a few hits today,” Pioneers coach John O’Brien noted. “There were a lot of seeing-eye hits on both sides.”Triton scored a run in the top of the first before the Pioneers (4-5) responded in the bottom of the inning. Tyler Palumbo singled and, after getting moved over, scored on an RBI single from Traverse Briana. After Jordan Roper sacrificed, Nick Bruno hit into an RBI fielder’s choice for a 2-1 lead.In the second inning, Triton scored three runs to go up 4-2. In the bottom of the frame, though, the Pioneers scored four times to retake the lead, 6-4. Palumbo and Briana walked, Roper singled, Bruno hit a 2-run double and Connor Lordan hit an RBI double.Triton tied the game 6-6 with two runs in the top of the fourth, then added two more in the fifth for an 8-6 lead. Lynnfield moved ahead in the bottom of the fifth. Lordan singled, A.J. Gallo singled, Connor Sullivan and Greg Basilesco each hit RBI singles, and Briana drove in a third run for a 9-8 advantage.The Pioneers scored two crucial insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Bruno singled, Lordan bunted, Gallo doubled and Sullivan hit a 2-run single. Triton scored twice in the top of the seventh but could get no closer.Bruno pitched six-plus innings and got the win. He left with two on in the seventh. Nick Pascucci came on and got the save.Peabody 5, Gloucester 1At Peabody, Andrew McLaughlin pitched a complete game, giving up only one earned run as the Tanners ran their record to 10-1. The win also preserved their perfect 8-0 record in the Northeast Conference. McLaughlin struck out five while scattering six hits and walking none. He now owns a record of 4-0 this season.In the first inning, the Tanners jumped out to a 3-0 lead after Ryan Collins drew a bases-loaded walk and Brandon Polignone drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.After Gloucester scratched across a run in the top of the fourth to make the score 3-1, Peabody got a 2-run double out of George Tsonis to extend the lead.Mystic Valley 11, Tech 1At Malden, the Tigers scored their lone run on an RBI ground-rule double by Alejandro Guzman. Yorby Martinez had a good day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two singles and a double.SOFTBALLWinthrop 4, Saugus 1At Winthrop, the Vikings spotted Saugus (0-9) a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Pauline Ascolese doubled off the fence and scored from third on a single up the middle by Brooke Westmoreland. Saugus threatened to score again, but Liana Ferullo gunned down a runner at the plate and pitcher Maura Lanza fanned the final two batters to end the threat.Winthrop (6-3) responded with two runs in the bottom of the first when Lanza singled off the pitcher’s glove up the middle to drive in a run and Kelly Swanson singled up the middle to drive in the second run. Winthrop added two more in the second inning when, with the bases loaded, Michelle Lasala singled off the centerfield fence to drive in two runs.Freshman Shannon Gayron went the distance for Saugus, allowing six hits and one earned run. Lanza allowed five hits, struck out nine and walked two for the win. The run was unearned.BOYS LACROSSEMarblehead 5, Beverly 4At Marblehead, the Magicians (8-3) defeated the Panthers for the first time since 2009.Beverly led 1-0 at the half and bumped it up to 2-0 before Marblehead rattled off three goals to take the lead. The Magicians added two more for a 5-2 lead. Beverly made it 5-4 with seven seconds remaining.Trevor Jones (4 goals) and Ian Maag (goal) did the scoring for Marblehead with Alex Conn getting an assist. Trevor Gelineau did well on the faceoffs and Zac Cuzner was a force in the midfield.
