Tennis: Marblehead boys sweep past Beverly, 5-0

Marblehead didn’t yield a set while defeating Beverly, 5-0, in NEC crossover action Monday afternoon at the newly-resurfaced Seaside Park courts.The match of the day came at first singles as Marblehead junior Chris Wigglesworth outlasted Beverly senior Josh Cronin 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 in a match that featured great rallies and lasted more than two hours. Marblehead coach Elisabeth Foukal said the two traded powerful forehands throughout the first set.At second singles, junior Miles Barry stopped Beverly’s Peter Coletti, 6-3, 6-2, combining great court sense with first-rate shot selection. Sophomore Griffin Butterfield defeated the Panthers’ Antuan Tran at third singles, 6-1, 6-1.The first doubles team of Jason Frost and Dimitri Vlassov displayed their expansive repertoire in a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Eno Jahor and Connor Irving. The second doubles unit of Alex Rothbard and Michael Forte topped Chris Tacco and Ryan Santo, 6-2, 6-4 in a match that featured the senior captain Rothbard’s strong play at the net.Swampscott 5, Revere 0At Swampscott, the undefeated Big Blue (10-0) made short work of Revere without surrendering a set. Ian Crimmins played singles for the first time and prevailed in the third slot, 6-4, 6-1. The pair of Erick Eaton and Tyler Gateman debuted at second singles with a 6-0, 6-4 win. First singles standout Matt Jacobs pitched a shutout, 6-0, 6-0; Val Temin rolled in second singles, 6-0, 6-2; and Sam Crimmins and Matt Gilberg posted a 6-0, 6-0 whitewash at first doubles.Revere is now 1-8.St. Mary’s 3, O’Bryant 2At Dorchester, the Spartans (7-3) picked up the decisive third point when O’Bryant forfeited at second doubles. St. Mary’s got wins from third singles Brady Ryan (6-1, 6-0) and the first doubles pairing of Matt McManus and Patrick Morin-Plante (6-0, 6-2).Gloucester 5, English 0At Lynn, the Bulldogs (1-7) had three solid performances in defeat, highlighted by the first doubles team of Shivam Patel and Billy You, which fell, 2-6, 6-3, 3-6. Mike Gately turned in a strong effort in a 4-6, 3-6 loss at second singles while the second doubles unit of Kenny Em and Thomas Long fell 4-6, 5-7.In other action, Danvers edged Peabody, 3-2 ? the Lynnfield-Masconomet match was rescheduled until today in Lynnfield.GIRLS TENNISSt. Mary’s 5, Matignon 0At GEEAA Field, the Spartans’ (3-7) Kat Troisi won 6-4, 6-3 at first singles. Anna DeBernardo (6-0, 6-0) and Annabelle Feliz (6-1, 6-2) picked up their first victories in singles. Christina Hallisey and Adelina Katzounos (10-6) and Jennifer Amaefuna and Krysta Bertocchi (10-5) took both doubles matches.Saugus 3, Classical 2At Breed Field, the Sachems (6-5) took two singles and a doubles match to hold off the Rams. Saugus’ Andrea Davis took the first singles match, 6-1, 6-2, and Bianca Rosato won the last singles match at 6-3, 6-3. The Sachems won first doubles from Julia Bellia and Deanna Velasquez, 6-2, 2-6, 6-0.For Classical, Ashley Ellis evened the score in the second singles match, 6-0, 6-0. Janelle Way and Shea Dunnigan won second doubles, 6-2, 6-3.Gloucester 3, English 2At Gloucester, the Bulldogs (3-5) lost a three-set match in doubles. Scarlett Santana (6-4, 6-1) and Ashley Lon (6-3, 6-1) had the wins in singles.Marblehead 5, Beverly 0At Beverly, the Magicians remained unbeaten at 10-0. Tori Booth (6-0, 6-1), Annie Ryan (6-3, 6-3), and Sarah Katz (6-0, 6-1) all had two-set victories in the singles matches. Meghan Gabel and Kelly Mealey won first doubles, 6-0, 6-0. Meghan Hanratty and Amanda Gilbert finished the doubles matches with a 6-1, 6-2 win.Peabody 3, Danvers 2At Peabody, the Tanners (8-2) came back by winning the last three matches. Dany Chhan started the rally by holding at love in the third singles match. Anna Grimalyak and Kayla Hodis won first doubles, 6-1, 6-2.
