Roundup: Fenwick baseball clinches share of CCL Large

The Bishop Fenwick baseball team put in some serious OT Saturday, knocking off Archbishop Williams, 2-1, in a 14-inning marathon that assured the Crusaders at least a share of the Catholic Central League Large championship. The teams meet again this afternoon in Braintree and Fenwick (12-3, 9-2) would clinch the title outright with a win.Joe Levasseur led off the 14th inning with an infield single deep to the shortstop hole and took second on a throwing error on the play. He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored the winning run when sophomore Mike Campatelli lined a single well over the drawn-in outfield.”It was quite a game to pull out,” said coach Kevin Canty.Andrew Lessard worked the first seven innings for Fenwick, striking out eight and allowing a single run in the fourth inning. James Delisola went two and two-thirds innings and made a key play in the ninth, covering the plate to record the second out of the inning after a wild pitch. Brian Burke closed out the win, striking out four and allowing one hit.Fenwick grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a run-scoring single by Gianni Esposito.Swampscott 12, Bedford 1At Swampscott, the Big Blue (6-9) snapped a three-game losing streak to sustain their postseason hopes and must win four of their final five games to qualify for tournament play.Sophomore catcher Ryan January (3-for-4) triggered a power surge with two home runs, a double and six RBI. January now has a team-leading four homers. Brendan McDonald had a home run and Robert Serino (3-for-4) added three hits, including a double, and scored three runs.Shortstop Trevor Massey anchored a strong defensive effort in support of winning pitcher Alex Zucchero, who went the first six innings and struck out six while walking four and allowing just a single hit.Lynnfield 3, Newburyport 0At Newburyport, the Pioneers (8-6) won for the sixth time in seven games behind sophomore Greg Basilesco, who had a complete-game three-hitter in a game that took an hour and one-half to complete. Basilesco also delivered the winning run in the first inning with a bases-loaded single. Lynnfield tacked on two runs in the fifth, courtesy of Connor Lordan’s run-scoring single and Connor Sullivan’s sacrifice fly.”Greg did a terrific job, kept them off balance all day. Both teams played very well defensively. It was a much-needed win after our loss to North Reading Friday,” said coach John O’Brien.BOYS LACROSSERevere 8, Malden 4At Revere, the Patriots (7-5) moved one step closer to tournament qualification with a strong defensive performance, limiting Malden to a single second-half goal. Goalie Doug Zingali numbered several close-range stops among his 11 saves.”We buckled down in the second half and played much better and with more discipline,” said coach Mike Guanci, whose club takes on Saugus today and tomorrow will complete the second half of a suspended game with Winthrop that it leads, 7-1, through one half.Anthony Padova scored three goals, Nick Carini notched a pair and Brian McNitt had a pair of assists.North Andover 14, Peabody 8At Peabody, the Tanners (8-7) battled the Merrimack Valley Conference Division 2 leader Scarlet Knights (12-3) to a halftime tie but couldn’t sustain the pace in the second half. Peabody must win two of its final five games to qualify for postseason play. Keifer Heckman (two goals, two assists) notched his 50th goal of the season while Eric Hennessey and Josh Fiore scored two goals apiece and Nick Ouellette and Reed Foster added one each. Defender Andrew Najjar had five takeaways and seven ground balls.Wayland 14, Danvers 1At Wayland, the Falcons were overwhelmed by the Dual County Small-leading Warriors (13-3) in non-league play.SOFTBALLLynnfield 12, Masconomet 7At Lynnfield, shortstop Lauren Guerra made her first career home run a loud one as her grand slam powered the Pioneers’ (10-6) upset win.
