Baseball: Swampscott prevails against Saugus

Trevor Massey tossed a complete game with six strikeouts in Swampscott’s 2-1 win over Saugus at World Series Park on Monday.”He was great,” said Swampscott coach Jason Calichman.The Big Blue (7-9) scored the winning run in the third inning when Ryan January singled. He stole second and third and came around to score on an error.The Sachems’ Dante DelTorto hit a home run to right field in the bottom half of the third inning. Dom DiPesa took the loss for Saugus. DiPesa went the distance with six strikeouts, seven walks, three hits, and one earned run.”It was a great game, a great win for us,” said Calichman.Arlington Catholic 2, St. Mary’s 1At Arlington, Clay Yianacopolus pitched six innings for the Spartans and allowed both runs (one earned) on four hits with three strikeouts. The Spartans (10-6, 6-5) got their only run on a fielder’s choice by Brendan Deleire after Dan Donovan (2-for-3) led off the inning with a double.St. John’s Prep 3, BC High 2At Danvers, the Eagles won their 15th consecutive game in nine innings. Dave Bornstein knocked out BC High with a solo home run over the centerfield fence with two outs. Dustin Hunt was the winning pitcher as he threw two innings in relief. He allowed just one hit and struck out a batter.Brandon Bingel went the first seven innings for the Prep as he struck out seven and allowed just one hit (a two-run single in the third inning). Nick Latham gave St. John’s a 2-0 lead with a two-run blast in the second inning.The Eagles (15-1, 6-1) clinched a tie for first place in the Catholic Conference with BC High.Danvers 8, Winthrop 1At Winthrop, Danvers rolled to its 15th victory. Brandon Hyde went six innings and allowed one run on two hits with two strikeouts. A.J. Couto had three hits (two doubles) and three runs scored. Dan Connors and Anthony Garin both went 2-for-2. Connors drove in two runs while Garin scored three runs for the Falcons (15-1).Archbishop Williams 4, Bishop Fenwick 2At Braintree, the Crusaders (12-4) lost in the eighth inning on a walk-off two-run homer. Fenwick fell behind 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth. The Crusaders battled back to score a run in the fifth on an Eric Razney RBI single. Joe Levasseur evened the score on a solo home run in the sixth inning. Fenwick left the bases loaded in the eighth inning and left nine men on base in the game. Levasseur pitched 7.1 innings as he allowed all four runs, with two of them earned, and struck out six batters.Beverly 9, Revere 2At Beverly, Eric Messina (4-2) pitched five shutout innings. Alex Toomey hit two home runs for the Panthers (12-4). Senior captain Anthony DiOrio added a homer.The Patriots fell to 4-12.In other action, Salem edged Classical, 7-6.
