Roundup: Lynnfield baseball qualifies for state tourney

The Lynnfield baseball team qualified for the state tournament with a 2-0 win Saturday over Amesbury at its home field.Greg Basilesco was the pitching star for the Pioneers. He went the distance, giving up five hits, walking one, and striking out two.”Our defense played real well behind him,” said coach John O’Brien. “Greg kept them off balance and he threw the ball well.”Lynnfield scored the only run it would need in the first inning, when Tyler Palumbo was hit by a pitch, stole second and third, and Jordan Roper’s sacrifice fly brought him home. It was one of two RBI for Roper.For good measure, the Pioneers scored in the sixth on Josh Fodera’s single, a fielder’s choice by Palumbo and Roper’s single.St. Mary’s 9, Spellman 0At Fraser Field, Brendan Deleire followed up on his win over Fenwick last week with a complete-game shutout, giving up one hit and striking out 11.”I couldn’t have asked any more out of him,” Spartan coach Derek Dana said.Vinnie Capano was 3-for-3 with an RBI, Scott Betts was 3-for-3 with a triple, a run and a stolen base, and Victor Molle was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.St. Mary’s, 11-6 overall, finishes at 7-5 in the Catholic Central League/Large.Fenwick 7, Swampscott 0At Fenwick, Joe Levasseur went the distance for the Crusaders, giving up five hits and fanning nine. Nick Bona had two hits, scored two runs and stole two bases. John Olivera scored two runs, had three hits and stole two bases. Overall, Fenwick stole nine bases.The Crusaders are 15-4 overall and 9-3 in the CCL/Large, and won the league title outright.BOYS LACROSSELynnfield 16, Cambridge 6At Lynnfield, Dan Sullivan led the way for the 8-8 Pioneers with four goals and five assists. Matt Boehner had three and three, Andrew Crampe and Jeff Knox two and two each, Andrew Waisnor two and one, and Chad Martin, Blake Strade and John Forgione a goal apiece.Marblehead 5, Newton North 4At Newton North, Trevor Jones had three goals and an assist, with singletons from Ian Maag and Dean Fader (both with an assist each). Zac Cuzner also had an assist. The Magicians are 13-3.GIRLS LACROSSELynnfield 14, Swampscott 9At Swampscott, Paige MacEachern scored nine goals and won nine draw-controls to lead Lynnfield. Senior captain Jess Miles added six draw controls of her own, along with a team-leading five ground balls to control the midfield. Senior captain Kate Lucich added four goals and goalkeeper Jess Folkins had 11 saves.For Swampscott, seniors Chloe Dorgan (2 goals), Bridget Lawless (2 goals), Alexa Goldman (1 goal), Marina Roberts (1 goal), and Cathryn Singley (1 goal) led the way with sophomores Priscilla Sullivan (1 goal, 1 assist) and Mackenzie Robertson (1 goal) rounding out the scoring. Freshman Katie Papele had 10 saves for the Big Blue.St. Mary’s 10, Greater Lowell 9At Greater Lowell, Gabby Crugnale had six goals while Paige Fielding had two.
