Lacrosse: Swampscott boys lose heartbreaker

The Swampscott boys lacrosse team took a two-goal lead in the fourth quarter against Austin Prep Monday night. However, Swampscott saw its two-goal lead slip away, and fell 7-6 at Swampscott.The Big Blue had a 6-4 lead with just over seven minutes to go. Austin Prep rattled off three goals in the last seven minutes to overtake Swampscott and eliminate the Big Blue from a chance at postseason play.”We played a great game today, but unfortunately just fell short,” said Swampscott coach Josh Field. “We have a great mix of experience and youth, but we are primarily a very young team. I have enjoyed watching these boys progress individually and as a unit. We are going to finish strong against Bedford on Wednesday. I am very proud of my boys and can’t wait for Wednesday.”Brian Santry and Kevin Marescalchi had two goals each for the Big Blue. Devon Wall and Griffin Hunt chipped in with a goal each for Swampscott (4-14).Williams 7, Fenwick 4At Fenwick, the Crusaders trailed 4-3 at the half. Leading the way for Fenwick was Aidan Moulton (2 goals, assist). Mark Malesnik and Kyle Russell both had one goal each for the Crusaders. Senior goalie Jake Brennan had 14 saves for Fenwick (10-9).Pentucket 5, Lynnfield 4At Lynnfield, Lynnfield trailed 3-1 at the end of the first half. The Pioneers opened up the second half with three unanswered goals to take a 4-3 lead in the fourth quarter. Pentucket answered with two goals, and retook a 5-4 lead with four minutes remaining. Dan Sullivan did all the scoring for the Lynnfield offense (4 goals). Freshman goalie Jack Ganter had a strong performance for Lynnfield (15 saves). The Pioneers (8-9) have one game remaining against Triton Thursday night; with a win, Lynnfield would qualify for the state tournament.Arlington Catholic 15, St. Mary’s 2At Arlington, Richard Cadigan and Cam Grenham each scored a goal and Kyle Torosian was solid in net (15 saves) despite the loss. Andres Rodriguez played well on defense. St. Mary’s finishes its season at 4-13.Northeast 12, Tech 0At Tech, the Tigers had a strong team effort despite the result. Tech (0-16) plays its last game of the year Tuesday night against Whittier.GIRLS LACROSSEMarblehead 18, Georgetown 8At Georgetown, the Magicians (15-2-1) took a comfortable 13-3 lead at the end of the first half. Leading the way for Marblehead was Kiley Fischer (4 goals, 2 assists). Tyler Phillips (assist) and Cassie Rodgers (2 assists) had three goals each for the Magicians. Pamela Gregory (2 assists) and Emily Freedland (assist) each scored a pair of goals for Marblehead. Meggie Collins had a great game distributing the ball for the Magicians (goal, 5 assists).Billerica 9, Peabody 8At Billerica, Billerica had two open-net goals and it proved the difference. The Tanners (11-4) had strong games from Nicole Napolitano (3 goals, assist); Nicole Pavo (goal); Courtney Smith (2 goals, 2 assists); Bianca Muscato (goal) and Christa Trombley (goal, assist). Peabody has one game remaining.Arlington Catholic 23, St. Mary’s 4At Manning Field, the Spartans (5-12) wrap up their season today against Pope John. Ashley Morelli had two goals and Leenie Murphy and Paige Fielding, one goal each.Austin Prep 18, Swampscott 8At Blocksidge Field, the Big Blue (3-16) were led by Gillian Trask, four goals, and Catt Singley, two goals. McKenzie Robertson had a good game in the midfield.
