The Saugus baseball team traveled to Winthrop Wednesday night. The Sachems dismantled the Vikings, 12-0, to qualify for the state tournament.”There are no easy games in the NEC, so I am very pleased with the season the boys have had thus far,” said Saugus coach Tom Gaeta. “It is always our goal to make the states and then see what happens.”The Sachems had a 9-0 lead at the end of the fourth inning and cruised the rest of the way. Dom DiPesa took the mound for Saugus and had no problems shutting down Winthrop (5 innings, 7 strikeouts, 2 hits, 0 runs). Dante DelTorto set the tone from the leadoff spot in the lineup for Saugus (5-5, 4 runs scored). Dan Cacciola had a very productive day at the dish for the Sachems (3-4, 4 runs scored). Saugus is now 10-9.Swampscott 4, Marblehead 0At Swampscott, the Big Blue (9-11) struck for two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to take a 4-0 lead. That was more than enough run support for Swampscott pitcher Al Wallach (7 innings, 4 hits, 5 strikeouts, walk, 76 pitches). Robert Serino had what proved to be the game-winning two-run double in the fourth inning (2-3, 2 RBI).Everett 6, Fenwick 2At Fenwick, it was all tied 2-2 at the end of seven innings. Everett had a four-run top of the 10th inning to put away the feisty Crusaders. Fenwick sophomore Rob Carillo took the mound for his second career varsity start, and he was very impressive (5 innings, 4 hits, 6 strikeouts, 2 runs). Fenwick (15-5) was down 2-0 going into the bottom of the fifth. Fenwick scored one run in the fifth on a Brian Burke RBI double. The Crusaders tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth, on a Joe Levasseur sacrifice fly (2 hits, RBI).Beverly 8, Salem 3At Salem State University, the Panthers (15-4) got the job done behind a strong pitching performance by Alex Toomey. Toomey struck out 11, walked one and gave up five hits for his sixth win. He also contributed with the bat, going 3-for-3 with five RBI. Harry Brown (2-for-3, 3 runs) also came up big. Beverly wraps up its regular season Friday against Newburyport.Chelsea 16, Tech 0At Fraser Field, the Tigers (2-14) had a good game from freshman shortstop Arlin Reynoso, who went 2-for-2. This was Tech’s final game.
