Roundup: Revere boys lax qualifies for states on first try

The Revere boys lacrosse team had one last chance to qualify for the state tournament at home Wednesday night on senior night. The Patriots did not disappoint, as they defeated Matignon 8-6. This was the first year that Revere had boys lacrosse as a varsity program.”This was really an awesome achievement the boys were able to attain,” said Revere coach Mike Guanci. “I am honored to be a part of this program and team.”Revere had a 4-1 lead at the end of the first half. Matignon tied the game 5-5 late in the third quarter. The Patriots outscored Matignon 3-1 in the final quarter.Revere seniors Anthony Padova, Kyle Gotham, Steve Reyes, Chris Venezia, Nick Carini and Austin Powers were all instrumental to the Patriots’ success.Padova led Revere with four goals. Revere finished the season at 8-6.Bishop Fenwick 10, Saugus 8At Saugus, the Sachems (8-8) trailed 8-3 heading into the final quarter. They finished strong, but couldn’t complete the comeback. C.J. Randolph (3 goals); Nick Benoit (goal, 3 assists); Chris Sanderson (2 goals) and Brandon Rolli and Ron Jarosz, one goal each, supplied the offense.Swampscott 4, Bedford 2At Bedford, the Big Blue (6-13) had single goals by Josh Rothwell, Kevin Marescalchi, Brian Santry and Griffin Hunt. Max Cohen (6 saves) was in net for the first half and Scott Powell (5 saves) for the second. Bedford led 1-0 at the break.BOYS TENNISBeverly 3, Classical 2At Beverly, the match was tied 2-2 and it all came down to first singles, where Seng Ly played well for the Rams, but lost a hard-fought match. Winners for Classical were: Rene Perez, first singles (6-4, 6-3); Philip Chea and Nick Gonzalez, first doubles (6-0, 7-6). The Rams are 9-8.Swampscott 5, Peabody 0At Peabody, Swampscott dropped one game total in the match. Winners for the Big Blue were: Matt Jacobs, first singles (6-0, 6-0); Val Temin, second singles (6-0, 6-0); Sam Crimmins-Matt Gilberg, first doubles (6-0, 6-0); Ian Crimmins-Mike Pindrus, second doubles (6-0, 6-1). Swampscott finished the season at 17-1.Lynnfield 5, Malden Catholic 0At Malden Catholic, Lynnfield’s Nick Romano at second singles (6-4, 4-6, 6-0) and Kevin Carr at third singles (3-6, 7-6, 6-4) both needed three sets to come out on top. The rest of the Lynnfield winners were: James Hook, first singles (6-1, 6-4); Luv Karia-Will Durkee, first doubles (6-2, 6-3); Mike Romano-Joe Crowther, second doubles (6-0, 6-2). Lynnfield is now 7-7.BC High 4, Marblehead 1At BC High, Marblehead (15-4) had a strong team performance despite the result.”Ten boys traveled to South Boston to play the second-ranked team in the state in BC High,” said Marblehead coach Elisabeth Foukal. “Even though we lost the match, I am really proud of how well (the) boys competed, right down the whole lineup.”The lone winner for Marblehead was Max Eidelman at third singles (6-0, 6-4).GIRLS TENNISSaugus 4, Pope John 1At Pope John, Saugus (9-9) qualified for the state tournament. Winners for the Sachems were: Andrea Davis, first singles (6-3, 6-3); Bianca Rosato, third singles (6-4, 6-3); Julia Bellia-Deanna Velazquez, first doubles (6-0, 6-2); Brenda Rodriguez-Ive Coreas, second doubles (6-2, 4-6, 6-3).Swampscott 5, Peabody 0At Swampscott, the Big Blue trio of Anna Raptunovich (6-0, 6-1), Vivien Gere (6-0, 6-0) and Veronica Pyatigorskaya (6-0, 6-0) dropped one game combined. The rest of the Swampscott winners were: Allegra Walker-Jessica Zolott, first doubles (6-2, 7-6 (7-5)); Natalyia Andrushchenko-Michelle Schnayder, second doubles (6-3, 6-3). Swampscott (15-2) plays Lynnfield Thursday.Marblehead 3, Lynnfield 2At Lynnfield, the Magicians’ Tory Booth won at first singles, 6-1, 6-0; Meghan Gabel-Kelly Mealey at first doubles (6-1, 7-5) and Meagan Hanratty-Amanda Gilberg, 6-7 (6-2), 6-2, won at second doubles.The Pioneers picked up wins from Ava Grava at second singles, 6-4, 6-3, and Izzy Figucia at third singles.GIRLS GOLFSaugus 5 1/2, Fontbonne Academy 1/2At Canton, the Sachems qualified for the state tournament
