The Lynnfield girls tennis team was in a tough match Thursday night against Swampscott. The Pioneers were able to wear down the Big Blue just enough to the tune of a 4-1 victory at Lynnfield.It was a very tight match, as three of the matches needed three sets to be decided.”This was a nice way to end the season,” said Lynnfield coach Craig Stone. “Swampscott is a very talented team. It was nice to see the girls step up to the challenge.”Winners for Lynnfield (11-3) were: Kelly Nevils, first singles (3-6, 6-1, 13-11); Ava Grava, second singles (6-4, 6-3); Emily Shea-Olivia Skelley, first doubles 7-5, 5-7, 6-1; Logan Colby-Nunziato-Sloan Colby-Nunziato, second doubles (6-1, 6-3). For Swampscott, Veronica Pyatigorskaya took third singles 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. Beverly is now 12-4.BOYS TENNISManchester-Essex 4, Marblehead 1At Marblehead, the Magicians played a competitive and hard-fought match despite the result.”The girls played well today against a good Manchester squad,” said Marblehead coach Elisabeth Foukal. “Matches like these ones just help us better prepare for the state tournament.”Marblehead’s Miles Barry ended up being the lone winner at second singles (7-6 (7-5), 7-5). Marblehead is now 15-5.BASEBALLSt. John’s 18, Gloucester 2At St. John’s, the Eagles (18-1) exploded for a 15-run second inning to pull away from the Fishermen. Dave Bornstein had a monster game at the plate for St. John’s (5-5, home run, 5 RBI). Tommy Buonopane and Nick Bragole both had two hits and three RBI for the Eagles. Alex Moore and Brandon Bingel chipped in with two hits and an RBI each for St. John’s. The Eagle duo of Jack Burke and Mike Driscoll shut down the Fisherman offense.Peabody 11, Revere 6At Revere, the Tanners (17-4) got a stellar relief peformance from sophomore Matt Correale (4 innings, 3 hits, 7 strikeouts, no walks). Matt Boucher went the first three innings with Correale coming in with the Tanners down 5-1.Sean McGrath went 4-for-4 with two runs scored, Christian Morales (4-for-4, 2 run, 3 stolen bases); Max Gordon (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and Steve Leavitt (3-for-4, 2 RBI).FRCS 10, KALC 7KALC came back in the bottom of the 5th inning to tie the game at 5 apiece. Then Foxborough Regional had a 5-run top of the 6th inning that put the game out of reach for the Panthers.KALC highlights were: Eric Jimenez pitched all 6 innings, and was the Panthers’ first pitcher to do that this season. Freshman Juan Jimenez played in his first game and had a game-tying RBI in his first at-bat. KALC’s overall record is 2-6.BOYS LACROSSEMarblehead 15, Salem 3At Salem, the Magicians cruised to a 9-1 lead at the half. Dean Fader led the way for the Marblehead attack (5 goals, assist). The other contributors to the Marblehead offense were: Trevor Jones (3 goals, assist); Brad Knittle (3 goals); Ian Maag (2 goals, assist); Trevor Gelineau (goal, assist); Ben Anderson (goal); Zac Cuzner (3 assists) and Harrison Young (assist). The Magicians finished the season at 15-3.
