Roundup: Prep, Peabody roll in D1 baseball

Top-ranked St. John’s Prep erupted for nine third-inning runs and powered past Malden Saturday in a Division 1 North sectional first-round matchup, 18-1. The Eagles (20-1) host Chelmsford in a quarterfinal game this afternoon (4).David Bornstein belted a three-run homer, Nick Bragole added a two-run shot and Keith Leavitt also went deep in support of winning pitcher Brandon Bingel. Nick Latham contributed a two-run single to the Eagles’ offensive onslaught.Peabody 9, Lowell 2At Peabody, the Tanners (19-4) prevailed behind seven strong innings from pitcher Pat Ruotolo, who struck out seven and allowed six hits with two walks. David Apostolidis finished up. Matt McIsaac went 2-for-4, including a two-run triple in a game-breaking seventh inning. Ryan Collins also drove in a pair of runs on a single. Peabody takes on Central Catholic in quarterfinal action this afternoon (4) at Bezemes Field.SOFTBALLDivision 3 NorthWinthrop 8, Northeast Regional 1At Winthrop, sophomore pitcher Maura Lanza struck out 13 through the first five innings in a dominant performance, raising her total to 158 Ks for the season. She finished the game with 14 strikeouts, walking two and allowing two hits. The Vikings (15-6) broke open a close game with four runs in the fourth inning, then added two in the sixth.Michelle Lasala went 3-for-4 with a double, drove in two runs, scored three and had a stolen base. Lianna Ferullo had two hits, including a towering three-run triple in the fourth, and scored two runs. She also had a hand in four of the final five outs while playing second base. Winthrop takes on Notre Dame of Tyngsboro in quarterfinal action this afternoon at home (4).Division 1 NorthActon-Boxboro 8, Peabody 0At Peabody, the Colonials took control early and eliminated the NEC North champs, who finished 13-6. AB raced out to a 6-0 lead through two innings. Holly Smith and Olivia Brothers had the only hits for Peabody against Kara O’Riley, who struck out eight and drove in four runs.Lexington 8, Revere 0At Lexington, the Patriots couldn’t solve Maddie Orcutt, who struck out 15 in a no-hit performance. Revere finished 13-8.Division 2 NorthTewksbury 8, Danvers 5At Danvers, the top-seeded NEC South champion Falcons saw their season come to an end when Tewksbury broke up a 5-5 tie with three runs in the top of the eighth. Danvers had an early lead on Caitlin McBride’s two-run double, fell behind, 5-3, then forced extra innings on Devon Johnson’s two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the seventh. Danvers finished 19-2.STATE TRACKBoysSwampscott senior Peter Hale ran a strong second in the two-mile with a time of 9:25.76, 13/100ths of a second behind Colin Bennie of Wachusett. The Danvers duo of senior Drew Piazza (800, 1:55.17) and Joseph Manson (shot put, 54-10 1/2) both finished fourth, as did Classical senior Steve Sam (discus, 150-01) and Salem senior Ben Sattiewhite (high jump, 6-4). St. John’s Prep’s 4×800 relay team ran fifth in 8:05.35 and Peabody’s 4×100 relay team placed seventh (43.84).Andrew DiMaiti of St. Mary’s placed fifth in the 400 hurdles with a time of 55.26.GirlsPeabody posted the area’s best showing with 23 points as senior Catarina Rocha won the two-mile in 10:34.5 (see related story), senior Heather McLean placed second in the 800 (2:11.44) and the 4×800 relay team placed fourth in 9:27.50. Danvers junior Catalina Dominick was fourth in the two-mile (11:20.56) and Marblehead junior Lily Cummings tied for fifth in the high jump (5-4).BOYS LACROSSEDivision 1 EastSt. John’s Prep 13, Andover 6At Andover, the Eagles (14-6) got goals from nine players and a terrific performance from junior goalie Lucas DeAngelo to advance to Wednesday’s quarterfinal game at home against Catholic Conference rival BC High. DeAngelo finished with 10 saves while senior Anthony Merullo and juniors Chris Casey Andrew Gallahue and Sam Frick all notched two goals each.
