LYNN – General Edwards Bridge renovation work will force late night and early morning drivers to use the Belden Bly Bridge and Route 107 or other routes starting on Sunday at 9 p.m. and continuing through Thursday, June 13, at 5 a.m.State transportation spokesman Michael Verseckes said the five-day, overnight 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. construction schedule for the General Edwards Bridge will allow workers to “undertake construction activities and perform testing of the electro-mechanical systems as part of the ongoing rehabilitation of the bridge.”Spanning the Saugus River, the General Edwards is the primary road route bringing traffic from Lynn and points north to Boston and Boston-area traffic north.Verseckes recommended drivers headed north after 9 p.m. turn off Route 1A in Revere onto Revere Street and take Route 107 out of Brown Circle to Lynn, then turn down Summer Street and take Commercial Street back to the Lynnway.Southbound drivers can turn off the Lynnway onto Commercial Street and take Summer Street to Western Avenue-Route 107 and cross the Belden Bly Bridge.Verseckes said the General Edwards is undergoing a $10 million renovation. The Belden Bly Bridge connecting Lynn to Saugus is undergoing an $11.8 million replacement that was scheduled to include the opening of a temporary bridge today next to the century-old Belden Bly.An equipment malfunction Monday threw the temporary span out of alignment, forcing state officials to reschedule the temporary bridge reopening and demolition plans for Belden Bly.”Our contractor is bringing on an independent consultant to develop a plan for corrective action. This will include a full and comprehensive assessment of any damage to the bridge and mechanical components. We should know the scope of the damage and a plan to move forward with repairs,” Verseckes stated in an email.Thor Jourgensen can be reached at [email protected].
