LYNN – With summer rolling in, safety is on everyone’s mind. The School Department will hold its second annual Elementary Safety Night Tuesday, June 11 at Drewicz Elementary, 34 Hood St. and June 12 at the Ingalls Elementary School, 1 Collins St. Terrace. The start time is 6 p.m. for both events.”I think it’s important because when you have young students going into summer, both students and parents need tools to have a safe summer,” said School Committee member Charlie Gallo.Gallo along with his colleague John Ford pushed to hold the safety nights last year. While the event at the Harrington School was attended by about 100 parents, the same event at Connery School was standing room only.”There must have been 300 parents at the Connery,” Gallo said. “(Principal) Mary Dill had the kids sing and there was an art component. It was really great.”Parents attending will hear presentations regarding swimming and fireworks safety and warning signs in regards to gang participation. There will also be a list of emergency phone numbers available and Community Policing officers will be on hand to talk about their role in the community. On the lighter side, participants will also hear about summer opportunities with the Lynn Public Library and the Park and Recreation Department. There will also be chances to win bicycles, North Shore Navigator tickets and Red Sox tickets with a free raffle at both events.”It’s a good way to start the summer,” Gallo said. “We’re hoping for a good turnout.”Chris Stevens can be reached at [email protected].
