Little League: Peabody softball defeats Wyoma

Olivia Keane dominated on the mound as the Peabody softball all-stars defeated Wyoma, 3-1, in District 16 play at Wyoma on Monday.View Photo Gallery”She played great defensively,” Peabody manager Keith LeBlanc said. “There were four or five ground balls hit right back to her for outs.”Keane finished with seven strikeouts. She allowed three hits and three walks.Wyoma took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Julia Jordan walked and Katie O’Shea hit an RBI double.In the bottom of the inning, the bottom of the order came through for Peabody to score three runs.Janine Goggin bunted and scored after Makayla Iannalfo laid down a bunt of her own. Iannalfo reached third on an errant throw and scored on a passed ball. Keane singled, stole second and reached third on a Mallory LeBlanc groundout. She scored on a passed ball.Peabody also got a double play from Sydney Lowry, who caught an infield fly to double off a runner at second. Keane finished the game striking out three of four batters in the sixth inning.Tianna Dawe pitched for Wyoma and allowed just four hits all game.”It was a tight game all the way,” Wyoma manager Rick Dawe said. “We knew Peabody was a good team.”Peabody travels to Swampscott on Wednesday (5:30) while Wyoma will face Saugus today (at Marblehead, 5:30).Swampscott 16, Lynn 4At Swampscott, the host team sent 18 batters to the plate in the first inning and scored 13 runs in the frame. Nicole Modica had two hits and two runs; Sydney Cresta hit a 2-run double; and Jillian Flanders, Lexi Howard and Katie Watts scored two runs each.The game was called after the top of the fourth inning. Modica pitched the first two innings, allowing one run while striking out four, and Hester Murphy pitched the last two innings, allowing three runs.Meghan Leavitt had two doubles for Lynn, which plays Marblehead today at Swampscott.Saugus 16, Salem 1At Marblehead, three players finished with multiple hits for Saugus: Alessia Salzillo (3-3, 2 RBI); Tessa Palermo (2-2, 2 RBI); and Caitlin Wright (2-2, 2 RBI). Hannah Spilman (1-1) and Emma Howard (1-3) each had one hit. The game went four innings. Howard pitched the first two innings (3 K, 1 H, 1 R) and Spilman the other two (she retired all six batters she faced).BASEBALLLynn Shore 2, Saugus American 0At Winthrop, Max Gieg pitched 5.2 innings for Shore, allowing two hits with three walks and fanning eight. Erick Ubri got the last out in the sixth. This was Shore’s first 12-year-old all-star win in at least a decade.In the first inning, leadoff batter Andy Duverge walked, took second on an error, went to third on a sacrifice fly and scored on Dayshon Anderson’s single for a 1-0 lead. The first batter of the second inning, Julien Silvestre, hit a solo homer for a 2-0 advantage.Shore also got defensive gems from Brayan Rodriguez, who threw out a runner at second, and Duverge, who made a nice play on a ball up the middle to escape a second-and-third situation. Shore will play Lynnfield Friday night.Lynnfield 10, Winthrop 0At Volunteer Field, the game went four innings due to the mercy rule. Coming up with good games for Lynnfield were Matt Relihan (3 RBI, single, double) and Liam Barrett (2 RBI, both on sacrifice flies).
