Little League: Marblehead tops Wyoma in softball

Marblehead defeated Wyoma, 4-1, in District 16 softball action at Lynn Woods on Thursday night.”Everyone from the top of the order to the bottom contributed,” Marblehead manager Peter Ernst said.Madi Ernst pitched a complete game (6 innings) with 12 strikeouts. Catcher Sophia Vener threw out two runners, one stealing second and the other third. Maggie Devlin had two hits and made a great catch at shortstop. Ernst only allowed three hits.Marblehead plays Swampscott today.Tianna Dawe did well pitching for Wyoma, and she also scored the lone Wyoma run, on a Meredith McIntosh single. Jillian Gentile had a double.”The girls tried hard,” Wyoma manager Rick Dawe said. “Marblehead came out on top. Their pitcher did a great job.”Peabody 8, Swampscott 0At Swampscott, pitcher Olivia Keane fanned eight with one walk and four hits for the winners.Kaycie Groom had two hits (a single and a double), walked and scored three runs. Makayla Iannalfo had a hit, an RBI and two runs. Amanda Crawford had an inside-the-park home run. Sydney Lowry had one hit and one run. Keene delivered two RBI on two sacrifice flies. Mallory Leblanc scored a run.In the second inning, Peabody got out of a jam. Swampscott had runners on second and third with two outs. Leblanc caught a ground ball to third and threw to catcher Crawford, who got the first out. Keane struck out the next batter and Crawford made a great catch of a foul ball to escape the inning.Groom and Alycia Gillen added great catches on fly balls.Nicole Modica pitched for Swampscott, allowing four hits and fanning seven. Sydney Cresta went 2-for-3, and the team got two hits from Katie Watts and Sarah Ryan.BASEBALLPeabody West 3, Peabody Blue 0At Volunteer Field, Nick Iannuzzi pitched a complete game for the winners, who got RBI from John Mulready and Chris Kwumutis. The other run scored on an error.Mason Zeuli pitched five strong innings for Peabody Blue.Pine Hill 6, Peabody White 2At Volunteer Field, Mike Leavitt delivered an 85-pitch complete game for the winners. Leadoff hitter Kevin Durant played second base and was a sparkplug for the team, manager Pete Dow said, adding that Matt Gisonno played “awesome” at first base.
