LYNN – A judge ordered a city man held without bail Thursday after police say a woman asked officers to check on her mother after the elder woman said her boyfriend had tried to strangle her.”The officers met with the victim, who answered the door and asked the officers ?what are you here for?’ and she was informed as to the purpose of our visit due to her daughter’s call,” Lynn Police Officer Mark Holey reported.John H. Woods, 59, of 16 Tarney Lane, was arrested and charged with assault-and-battery; and assault-and-battery with a dangerous weapon; at 7:23 p.m. Wednesday. The alleged victim’s daughter called police and reported that she had been on the phone with her mother that evening. The alleged victim’s daughter told police her mother said Woods had tried to strangle her moments before, according to police.Police responded to the mother’s home, and she admitted to officers that Woods had grabbed her by the neck and started to strangle her, according to police. The alleged victim also said Woods slammed her head against the kitchen table while strangling her, police reported.”The victim states she never came close to losing consciousness but she did have noticeable red marking around her neck consistent with being grabbed with force,” Holey reported.Assistant District Attorney Aimee Conway requested that Woods be held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing to be held at a later date, according to court documents. Judge Stacey Fortes granted the request, ordering Woods held without bail until a dangerousness hearing scheduled for July 3.Cyrus Moulton can be reached at [email protected].
