Boaters tout restoration of Lynn marina

July 4, 2013 by cstevens

LYNN – Seaport Marina is sporting its summer fashion with new wide cement docks, slender electrical boxes and some new steel pilings.”I think they did a really good job,” boat owner Dante Tuccero said at the marina on Tuesday. “They are much superior to the slips we had. They will last longer and will hold up better in a storm too.”The 160-slip marina underwent a $600,000 makeover last winter after years of storm damage and neglect forced the city to pink slip more than 100 boat owners who rented slips last summer. Not all of the docks needed replacing. Community Development Director James Marsh said the three short docks closest inland are sound, but the B, C, D and E docks were replaced. The E dock also doubles as a wave attenuator, which offers some protection from southeasterly storms, Marsh added.Nor’easters tend to get all the attention when it comes to New England storms but because of where it is situated the marina is more susceptible to storms out of the south, Marsh said. With the new docks, electrical and water service in place the true test, Marsh said, will be to see if boaters come back next summer.Tuccero is already back. He said he has kept his boat, “My Ree Ree,” at the marina for about 10 years, up until last year when he moved to another marina because the slip conditions had deteriorated. Tuccero, a Norwood resident who has a house in Nahant, returned to Lynn this year because he was “very pleased” with the renovations. There is still some work to do. The gas dock is shut down for the season which leaves local boaters with only two places to gas up, Point of Pines Yacht Club in Revere or Marblehead Harbor. Marsh said work should begin on installing a new gas dock later this summer.”(City) Council appropriated another $500,000 in the $4 million bond it approved to redo A dock and put in a brand new gas dock,” he added.”I sorely miss the fuel dock,” said Tuccero. “That would be a big help when they put fuel back in service. Other than that I don’t know how you can ask for a better slip. It’s beautiful.”
