Cy Kilgore of Beverly won his 17th Tedesco Club Championship on Sunday, extending his record total.”Obviously, it was a very hard-fought victory,” said Kilgore, whose collection of championship wins at Tedesco spans four decades and is 10 more than Ted Carangelo, a former state amateur champion whose seven wins at Tedesco rank second all-time.”It’s always nice to win in golf,” Kilgore said. “It doesn’t happen that often. You just hope to play well. When you win, it’s a real bonus.”Kilgore did not lead until the end of play on Sunday. He won on the 19th hole over Chuck DiGrande of Nahant.”He’s an excellent player,” Kilgore said of DiGrande. “He had a really good tournament, really played well. He was in control (but) he missed one shot coming down 18 that cost him.” Still, Kilgore said, “He played strong golf.”As for the course itself, Kilgore said, “The final holes are very strong. I was three down, seven to go. I won 12 and 15 and was back into a chance to tie it up. It didn’t happen till 18.”It sounded like Kilgore had plenty of motivation entering the tournament.”I’ve been playing fairly well,” he said. “In golf, you get a little bit more inconsistent as you get older. I’m 59. Beating younger people is half the motivation.”Rich Tenorio can be reached at [email protected].
