SWAMPSCOTT – The new Regionalization Committee is beginning to take shape as town committees members choose representatives from their own ranks and from a pool of residents to sit on the committee. The committee will be charged with researching options for Swampscott to share services, such as education and public safety, with other towns. Former Finance Committee Chairman Michael McClung proposed the committee, which was later approved at May?s Town Meeting, as a way to solve Swampscott?s financial problems.?Until we get a group focused solely on what can be regionalized, we will not get to a point in which we can get a sustainable model moving forward,” said McClung when he first proposed the committee in March. At their meeting July 1, the Board of Selectmen were all in agreement that Selectman Barry Greenfield should be appointed to the committee.?Barry is always looking for ways to regionalize,” said Selectman Matt Strauss when nominating Greenfield, who admitted the subject matter was “a bit of a passion” for him.The selectmen also appointed former selectmen Chairman Rich Malagrifa because of his contacts in Lynn, Nahant, Salem and Marblehead. Also appointed was Joe Domelowicz, the grants administrator and town planner in Winthrop. The selectmen reported that Town Moderator Joe Markarian had already appointed McClung, and that the School Committee elected Amy O?Connor to the committee. Markarian will be able to pick one more person, and the Finance Committee had yet to designate their member.Kait Taylor can be reached at [email protected].
