PEABODY – A Peabody woman is being evaluated at a mental health center in Boston after police say she tried carjacking two cars at the Stop & Shop on Howley Street in Peabody.Rosamaria Guarino, 31, of 20 Crane Ave., Peabody, was arrested and charged with assault and battery, two counts of carjacking, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and negligent operation of a motor vehicle on Wednesday at 10:50 a.m., according to a Peabody Police Press release.Steve O’Connell, spokesperson for the Essex County District Attorney’s Office, said Guarino was held without bail pending arraignment in Salem Court Friday and was sent to Solomon Carter Fuller Mental Health Center in Boston for 20 days for evaluation to determine “criminal responsibility and competency.”A press release from Peabody Police states that at around 10:50 a.m. on Wednesday, officers responded to the Stop & Shop on Howley street for a 911 call. Off-duty Peabody Police Sgt. Richard Girolimon notified communications and acknowledged he was following a suspected stolen vehicle which fled into Salem.Salem and Peabody police located the vehicle after a brief search in Salem and arrested the driver, later identified as Guarino, said the release. The release states that Guarino allegedly tried to steal a motor vehicle that was parked in the fire lane of Stop & Shop and when confronted by the owner, a struggle ensued. After she was unable to gain access, the release states Guarino ran to a second vehicle that had stopped to offer help and fled the scene.Guarino is due back in court on August 5.Matt Tempesta can be reached at [email protected].
